RAID on a "normal" system?

Hi all

I have a question which may have recently become stupid but blah blah blah.

I have always associated RAID support with servers, and ONLY servers. You know...servers should have a RAID system on them so that you aren't shut down for long if a hard drive goes down.

But is there any reason to have a RAID compatible motherboard on a gaming system? I mean, other than the fact that you could have 4 hard drives (which I don't plan on accruing any time soon), is there any other big reason to buy the RAID model of a motherboard compared to the non-RAID model?

Thanks,
TGHH

well there's different types of RAID. you can configure for mirroring, in case you lose a drive, you're not dead. you can configure for striping, which will improve i/o performance, or you can configure for both. if you're a real hardcore computer nut 🙂 RAID striping will really improve your system speed.
