For the rig in my sig. Will be using Seriell converters, so two IDE HDs.

One is a Maxtor 2MB buffer, 60gig 7200 rpm (ATA133)

Other is Maxtor. 8MB buffer, 80gig 7200rpm. (ATA133)

Will they play nice together?

(Plesae no need to debate the merits or offer better solutions. I have these parts and just wanna experiment. I ask the question because another 80giger is in sale till Tomorrow night. Don't wanna buy a second (identical) unless absolutely need it -saving for ram & vid card upgrade :) )

Get the 80 G because this way you won't loose 20 G. 60 and 80 works in a RAID 0, but you'll get a maximum of 60 G storage.

Thanks. Good news for me.

Its for my ganming rig, I never use more than 30 gigs. So, to clarify the lose of the extra 20gigs doesn't matter to me.

Anybody else?

Thanks,

Fern

Ummm. no. That is incorrect. RAID1 maybe, not RAID0

Also. Don't get the Seriell by Abit, the Syba is the same chipset (Sil3611) smaller, and cheaper.

You will lose 20GB on one drive and both drives will only go as fast as your slowest drive. I say go for it with the two drives...I love my RAID 0 set up I dont think I would ever go back.

Hey Ribbon

Help me on the RAID O thingy. maybe I've said something wrong but I thought 2 60gigers in RAID O gave you 60gig total too? Yeah, maybe I'm confused myself, cuz I think RAID 1 also gives 60g (2 copies, original and backup, gonna try that too)?

So I guess RAID O gives 120gig (in my senario) half on one the other 60 on the other huh.

Yeah, I've got one seriell and was gonna look for the Syba to add as second. I've been told they'll play nice together :)

Thanks everybody,

Fern

Thats incorrect. Since one drive is 60 gigs and the other is 80 gigs, the extra 20 gigs on the larger drive will not be useable, allowing for a total storage of 120 gigs as opposed to 140 gigs if they were set up as independent drives. This is in a RaiD0 (striping) situation). In a RAID1 (mirroring) solution, a duplicate of one drive is created on the other, effectively 'mirroring' the first drive. So you'll have 60 gigs only if you implement a RAID1 solution.

And while you're at it, you may as well read this before you buy.

I was thinking a max of 120GB. I was thinking that it would ignore the extra 20GB of the other disk.

Are you saying leave them IDE, one on controller 1, the other on 2?

If so, well I'm gonna play with RAID 0 on the gaming rig. If I find diff than what AT reports, I'll post it. Others swear by RAID 0. Anyway, looking for something to play with :)Later, prolly next year I'll carry 'em over to a server and do RAID 1. I test stuff on my gaming rig b4 trying out a server.
