Raid - mix drives allowed?

Can a ibm and wd drive for example be used together when setting up a raid system or do you need to stick with the same brand of hd.
 
From what I know about it which is little. You can mix drives size and types but the raid array will be twice as big as the smallest drive. If you have a 30Gb and a 40Gb drive your array will be 60Gb.
