How do I go bout setting up a RAID 1?
Do I install the 2 hard drives, the raid card, the operating system on one of the hard drive and then the RAID software? Please help. Thanks.

There are two ways to do RAID in a normal Home enviroment. Reason I say home is because there are dedicated hardware that you can buy that has RAID functions built in but I assume you are speaking from a home user point of view.

You can use a Windows Server suite to do whats considered a software RAID. Because this is done from within Windows and its Disk Administrator MMC utility it is considered Software RAID.
This software RAID requires just that you have two or more drives hooked up and visible by the OS and you will be able to use them in a RAID Array.

The other method is a Hardware solution which is done by using a dedicated RAID controller. You would hook up your Hard Drives to the controller then using the onboard interface from the controller you would control how the RAID volumns are made. The Operating System and Bios will view this new setup as a single Hard Disk and it will be transparent to all your application.

There is no "RAID software" you need to install, just either a RAID card or an OS that supports software RAID.
