RAID harddrives

Hi. Can someone give me a good explanation as to how this RAID thing functions using more than 1 hard drive and by how much it actually increases performance.

simply its just use more than 1 drive to increase security and/or performance

for example RAID0 use two drives as one, so you have two drive reading and two drive writing at the same time.

RAID1 use two drive and one of the drive is a exactly duplicate copy of the other, if one drive is dead, you'd still have the other drive with the original data.

So, RAID hard drive systems will show no performance increase while writing to disc, but will show performance increase while reading disc data?

depends, some will show a performance boost in read for raid 1...depends on controller. go to storagereview.com and read up, its too much to type.

In a lot of cases raid 0 will actually slow performance. If you are running apps that use very large files you may get a performance increase, for general use a non-raid setup will run as fast or faster than the raid 0. I got caught up in the raid frenzy and ran IDE raid, then moved up to 15k U160 scsi raid. After being dissapointed in the performance increase and doing a LOT of reading on "Storage review" I dumped the raid and am now running my scsi drives in a non raid setup and am a lot happier with them. Do as OrooOroo suggested and do some reading on storagereview.com, you may find that you really don't want raid

There are different types of Raid arrays. Their ability to increase performance completely depends on what application you use them for. They could offer more or less security than a single drive.
