Have you noticed the recent trend in computing? Get two of everything!

Raid Hard Drives
Dual Monitors
Dual Processors

What's next, Raid CD-RW Burners?
Imagine...
You can burn 1400 megs with RAID CD burners, just be sure you put both cd's in, because one CD is useless...
Raid floppies? Raid Videocards? Oh wait.. there was the VooDoo2....

Anyway, just my observation.

It seems to be a trend. But, really, who uses 2 monitors and you only need to use RAID if you're working with sensitive data. For the average user or gamer RAID is unnecessary. Also, SLI in videocards will definately be the future. nVidia and ATI can double the power of their 3D chips simply by adding another chip on the board and using SLI technology.

Dual monitors is really only for professional work. The average users doesn't need them.

Likewise with Dual CPUs. Cool...but a single fast CPU is enough for most people's regular work, and most games don't use SMP.

IDE RAID0 is the stupidest fad to come along in a LONG time...IDE disks are not reliable enough to use in a RAID0 only config, and since RAID0 doesn't improve seek time it doesn't help all that much performance wise for most people either.

RAID1 is alright if you are anal about your data...I just use CDRs for backup purposes.

Dual Video Chips would be cool...I think nVidia really underestimates the useful ness of SLI/MAXX type video chips. Not as "elegant" as a single chip solution perhaps...but imagine a Voodoo5 if the VSA-100 was as powerful as a GF-256 or GF2GTS? That would rock.

The V5 is mediocre becuase the VSA100 is just a Voodoo3 + large textures + 32bit colour....but if the VSA100 was actually a powerful chip then the V5 would have been a pretty damn sweet card.

The rest of the Duals I think are a little over zealous.

But that's just me ;)

Hey I used to run Tri-Optical drives ;)

(CDRW and DVD. But the CDRW was only 24x Read and my old DVD Rom was a pretty bad CDROM, so I also had a CDROM ;) CDRW/CDROM/DVDROM, suck that you weenie duals ;) I took the CDROM out now because my new Toshiba DVD is a good CDROM)

You mean dual floppy drives like when computers used to have a 5 1/4" and a 3 1/2"? I've never seen 2 of the same size floppy drives on one machine, although I'm sure it's happened before.

Speaking of Nvidia doing SLI. That sure would be awesome if they did a Voodoo5 style board, with DDR memory! Think of all the bandwidth that would yield.

I had a PC with dual floppies of the same size, I can't remember if they were the 5 1/4" or 3 12" ones though, and I can't remember if it was my XT or my 286...

Thing is, how many of use are *AVERAGE* users?

I haven't updated my system rigs, but I've upgraded my plans for Project Jukebox to not only have dual Athlons and two displays, but 4 60GXPs in RAID 5. Muahahahahaha!

Dual 3.5" floppies were cool! :D Being able to copy disks without all that swapping really saved time... Dual 5.25" drives were nice too, and so were the Teac 3.5"/5.25" combo drives... :)
