Raid dependability...To be stable, or not to be stable, that is the question

i hear people talking about a drive failing in raid, but how often does that really happen? if i were to put a computer together for my girlfriend's parents, and this one HAS to be the best and the fastest (for brown points), would raid be the way to go? i want to get two 30gb 7200rpm ATA100 Western Digitals on a Gigabyte 8IRXP...what are the chances of this ever failing or becoming unstable for some reason?

would i be better off to just get a bigger drive, i was thinking about the 120gxp 60gb IBM 7200rpm ATA100

and yes i know two 30gbs on raid0 does not equal 60gb...im not a total noob 🙂

also, how hard is it to setup raid? im not really concerned with that (somewhat, but not a whole lot), im just curious

thanks

by the way, i know two 30gbs OR a single 60gb is not the fastest, but i have a budget here...i meant to say the fastest WITHIN my budget 🙂
