Raid controller for Raid 5 server

I'm working with a friend of mine to rework his home storage system. He currently has a Qnap but his storage requirements have outgrown the 2bay Qnap. He has an HTPC he never uses so currently the working plan is pick up a raid controller and 4x 3TB WD Reds to do a raid 5 setup.

However his motherboard has UEFI bios though so everything we're finding seems to be incompatible except for 6-700$ plus ones.

A quality hardware raid controller will be expensive. I paid $550 for my 8-port raid card several years ago.

One option is to use software raid under linux. Use something like btrfs or FreeNAS with ZFS and he should be good to go. Just make sure that you look at the pros and cons of each before starting.

Most home storage servers don't need the performance that justifies spending lots of money on a hardware raid card. I'd stick with software raid. It's just as easy to setup, easier to troubleshoot, and much easier to transfer to another system if need be.
