I need help w/ the config of this board(Asus P4P800) for Raid 0. When I format and install, the system sees both HDD but only shows one usable(ie.148.6 G 74.3 G available)

when setting up raid the raid utility and the mobo bios will show the 148 gig option and under that will be the two 74 gig drives that make up the raid, chose to format and install only to the 148 gig as format of the two drives seperately will not allow windows to see the 148 gig raid setup that you have created.

this is with the assumption that the two drives that make up your raid are 74 gig drives ! if i read it correctly

PS it would help if you would create a SIG / list your hardware

They are actually 80g drives. I approximated the formatted #'s for the purpose of my question. When I format in RAID config I show the sum of both drives but only show half the total available for storage purposes. Correct me if i'm wrong, but RAID 0 is a striping function not backup or rewrite, correct? If that is the case I should be able to read and write to both simultaneously and still have full capacity for storage. I hope I have better conveyed my question this time, and per request put up a sig. If I recall ,when I originally went to Asus boards, I ran across threads to the affect that the Raid was hard to configure, but don't recall where I found that info.
Thanks for your response.

80 gig drives wont showup as 80 gig, most will be between 74-76 gig, with raid 0 you should see 145-150 gig approx, and when installing a OS you will have to format the 145-150 gig to have the complete available storage, formating them individually on erases any data to that drive, for windows to see the the full capacity you have to format the full cap,if you can format the full cap and windows doesnt see it you could have a bad drive.

are you pressing F6/F8 to inter the setup utility ?

are the jumpers removed or jumpered alike ?

what chipset does your board have ?

can you describe the process taken to set it up ?

Standard install. Both drives are fdisked and formatted then put in prior to OS install. If I select yes use RAID it will show full storage but only half usable. This board uses delete to enter the Bios set-up. F8 would be safe mode on almost every computer I've used. The board has an I865PE chipset by the way.

NEVER MIND, this whole thread is pointless. Do a search for RAID on search line and look for TRASHMAN. Follow the link and you'll forget about it too.

That isn't the link I was talking about. The one to which i referred was pertaining to benchmarks for raid0 performance and risks. I am convinced that unles I can also operate in raid1 at the same time it is a bad option since losing one drive would mean losing half of everything. In this game, half of everything means you would be left with absolutely nothing, including your OS. I am operating Windows like most of you and have to reinstall entirely too often as it is. I sure as hell don't need one drive dying to cause me to do it and lose everything at the same time. THE END
Sorry for the rant, but too often we are convinced something is a good thing just to keep up with the jonses, and this was a good one to sell hard drives in my opinion.I don't see where this configuration is good for any home user and I wish I had been better informed before I asked the question in the first place.I'm sure many people will lose it all before they realize what happened and then have to do all the work to find the bad drive or buy two new ones to protect against another failure.
DONT USE RAID0 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

how true, raid 0 really has no use on a home based sys for everyday use !!!!!
