Raid Card

I have a Promise Fastrak100 Raid card I am not using. Does anyone know if I can install the card and connect my cd rom and cdrw to it so as to get them on seperate IDE channels? This is on a Shuttle ak11 board which only has 2 ide channels. I need to separate the cd rom and the writer, but hate to slave one of them to the hard drive.

Typically, a software Raid Controller (which is what you have) is best used for hard drives only. For example, my Abit KT7-Raid motherboard has the Highpoint 370 Raid controller. It does not like ATAPI devices (CDR, CDRW, DVD) devices on it.

I empathize w/your desire to have additional IDE channels. We ALL want more channels. Here's what you do. (I'm assuming you don't want to run RAID 0 or RAID 1; if you did, you'd be using the card for it's intended purpose). Physically install the card. Put your HD on the card. Put your CDR/CDRW on the motherboards Primary and Secondary channels. Boot up. Let system auto-recognize. Install driver. Reboot. Enjoy! 🙂
