He set up a RAID array with one computer or one hard drive? If somehow he was able to trick a controller into setting up one drive as a RAID 0, it wouldn't improve performance at all. If he somehow set it up over multiple partitions on the same disk, it would probably decrease performance, since the first partition would be the quickest to access and the other partition would take longer to access.
Multiple drives are pretty much the best way to improve performance on a desktop (not necessarily in RAID) with smaller first partitions on the drives for the files you typically want to access more quickly than others and other partitions for data storage.
