RAID Array Partitioning

Hello,

Can fdisk be used to partition a RAID Array? I have 2 identical 20GB IBM ATA/100 HDD's. After the RAID is setup, I don't want just one 40GB drive; I'd rather partition them up into smaller chunks. Is that possible with fdisk? I have Partition Magic, but perfer to partition the HDD prior installing any OS.

I just recently setup my first "RAID 0 experiment" I have two Maxtor DM+ 40 giggers on the onboard (KT7R) raid controller. I chose not to partition, but I've been told on this forum that you can partition a RAID array just like any other drive. Technically, a two-three-or ten drive RAID 0 array is seen as one drive by your OS. Do you have a backup HD? I use my DM+45 for backup. The ideal (from what I've seen) RAID-type setup is to have your OS on a RAID0 on two very fast (read SCSI...out of my $$$$ league) drives and everything else, to include games, apps, storage, etc, on a big old IDE drive.

Getting back to your ?, go ahead and make partitions, they'll be fine. As far as using Partition Magic instead of FDisk goes, I'll defer to the gurus on that one. Good luck though. Let us know how it turns out.

Yes you can use fdisk. I'm using the same drives on my KT7-RAID, in a RAID 0 format and I had no problems. I setup 4 - 8GB partitions, with the rest of the free space in 1GB partitions (CD image staging).

Partitioning an array is just like partitioning one drive. I have three partitions on my RAID array, C: D: and E:. For the OS, applications, and games/junk respectively. Makes backing stuff up a lot easier.
