I've never used RAID before and have a basic question. When using RAID 1, what will prompt/require a rebuilding of the array other than 1 drive failing and/or swapping out a different drive.
That is, let's say it's hardware SATA RAID on a motherboard with an integrated controller. If the motherboard chokes, is the data lost? Does the array need to be rebuilt? Or can I just plug one of the drives into an identical system and keep going? In other words, where is the "RAID setting" data stored? On the controller or on the drive?
Also, can I take a RAID 1 array built on one motherboard's controller and place it into a different motherboard?
EDIT: if I need to clarify, assume these 2 scenarios (both RAID1):
1) Can one of these drives be removed at any point and hooked up to some other computer (either internally or externally) and still have access to data? In other words, does the RAID array for RAID1 somehow alter the disk so it can't be used as a standalone without a format?
2) Let's say the motherboard fails. Can both of these disks be used in a different machine under a different controller? (or just one of these disks in a different machine with no controller at all)? Obviously system drivers would have to be reinstalled.
