Raid 1 Question

bob4432

Lifer
if i have a 2 disc array that is raid 1 on a pci pata card, could i just plug in one of the drives into a ide channel on the mobo and read it? or does the controller make it so that you always have to use it?

It'll prolly read it but your RAID will tell you to hook up another Drive. Try it as it won;t hurt any thing

If you make a RAID array with a controller, the array will only work with that kind of controller.

so i guess the best anal redundant solution would be to backup a raid 1 array to a seperate pata hdd with something like acronis true image?

That's what I do and the new Acronis copies HD's quickly...

He's not asking if the array will work without the controller.
He's asking if he can simply plug one of the previously RAIDed HDs into his MBs IDE connector.

As always, you are the soul of sensibility. Not only that, but for RAID 1 there's no reason why the controller would have to add any extra information to each disk; hence, I can't see a reason why a RAID 1 array wouldn't automatically work if you switched controllers.
