Raid 1 Q

Ok. Long story short, my friend just got 2 raptors and wants to raid0 them so hes giving me his other HDD(Same HDD as mine). I wanted to know if could put this new HDD into my machine after i format it and make a raid array. Am i going to have to reformat my HDD before I can raid these two together, or can I just plug the new HDD in and raid it with the existing files on my HDD. I never set up a raid array so help would be great
