Why not have the best of both worlds? I'm using an AMI Enterprise 1200 RAID SCSI card and four U/FW Cheetahs in a RAID 10 arrangement where the drives are both mirrored and striped. Since the technology is about one generation old the RAID card with 128megs of cache memory cost me $135 and the 9gig Seagate 10K RPM Cheetahs (ST19101WC) were $58 each. It's not on the bleeding edge but it still flies.
i'm building a new athlon xp rig. i usually just surf the net and do the occasional qIII arena or UT. so, i'm trying to decide which would be a faster setup. using one scsi drive or using 2 ide drives in raid 0. i don't know if i can afford to scsi's in raid.
In most applications, the SCSI would feel faster thanks to the lower latency. The total throughput of the IDE RAID0 may be higher, but how often do you transfer enormous files compared with accessing smaller ones?
Well whatever suites your budget. Example: A 20gig SCSI hard drive is about $250-$300. While 2 20gig hard drives (for a RAID 0 setup) are about $120 - $150.
