RAID 0 array disappears during backup - kind of...

I'm running Windows 8.1 on a 4930k / ASUS X79 Deluxe and am using the onboard Marvell controller with a two-disk RAID 0 array. There are two drives on the RAID 0 partition and every time I include them in a backup (using Genie Backup Manager Pro 9), the backup hangs at some point.

After the backup hangs, the two drives on the array appear in the File Explorer but the "size" and "free space" columns are blank. So they don't really disappear, but clearly there's something not right. After that happens, the system works fine except I can't access those drives and I can't shut down (I have to kill the power to the machine).

The problem occurs only when I run the backup program - I can run the computer all day and I never have any trouble with the drives until I try to run the backup.

Has anyone run into a similar problem and found a solution?

Thanks,

Any reason you are not using the Intel controller for the RAID array? They have a much better track record than Marvell.

I used the Intel controller for my SSD's and the Marvell controller for my HDD's (which have the RAID array).

I tried to move the RAID array to the Intel controllers but then I have to switch the controller type to "RAID" instead of "AHCI". When I do that, Windows won't boot, I assume because the boot disk is on the Intel controller and it's confused by the change (it was set to "AHCI" when I installed Windows 8.1). This is the first time I've set up a RAID array, so I'm not completely familiar with how everything works.

Any workarounds for the Windows boot problem? Again, when I set it back to "AHCI" it boots fine, but then, of course, I can't use the RAID array on the Intel controller.

Thanks for the assistance,

RAID does not transfer between controllers, that I know of.

So, do you have a way to access the data on your RAID array now?

After you enable RAID did you check the boot priority to ensure that your SSD is still first?

In my experience a RAID 1 array created on the Intel controller will transfer to my Silicon image controller, but not vice versa. So, YMMV.

Yes - the BIOS did switch the boot disk and I had to change it back. It still won't boot in RAID mode. Some more web searching revealed that's pretty standard. Apparently you can boot into safe mode and it'll load the appropriate driver then boot. Would be nice if Windows did that automatically... instead I just get the :( screen over and over...

I had set up the RAID array just before removing my old motherboard (ASUS P6T) and it transferred to the new motherboard (X79 Deluxe) without any issue. Of course, I backed up all the data before starting this exercise...!

I assumed that "RAID" mode meant that everything connected to the controller was in a RAID array but I gather that's not the case.

My previous RAID array was on its own controller, so I'm not sure if there are any issues with having both RAID and non-RAID disks on the same controller set to "RAID" mode - are there?

Thanks again,

No issues at all. The non-RAID disks will just show up as non-member disks, but function just fine.
