Raid 0 6Gbs Vertex 3 (or equiv ssd)

Hey im a noob to forums but ive been looking everywhere for raided new gen sata 3 ssd that are 6Gbs, im looking at getting an OCZ vertex 3 which is rated around 550 MBs read and write, which from what ive read is almost saturating sata 3 (600MBs)? So is there any point getting 2 vertex 3s and raiding them? ( say 2x120gb instead of 240gb). If anyone has tested this or could give any information that would be great 🙂
I have an i7 950 / gb ud3r / 6gb ram / radeon 5850x2 if anyone wanted to know what my PC was.

Seeing as raiding a pair of Vertex 2s only shaves a second off the Windows 7 boot process, I would imagine the gains are even less on a Vertex 3.

If you want fast sequential transfers, just raid some regular HDDs.

V3's will be superior in the fact that incompressible wire speed is higher than V2. Most other parameters are also stronger regardless of the sata2 bottleneck.

The other thing to consider is the major changes to the throttling algorithms and much more aggressive/efficient GC.

If I were in the market for a raided pair of drives, I would be looking ahead and stay away from last gen SF due to sata2 bandwidth, throttling, and recycling limitations. Even at the cost of an additional $200. You'll get more bang for the buck in the long run, especially when you do go to a good sata3 mobo.

i'm more concerned with the longevity of these new v3 drives. i've had my fair share of ocz drives completely crapping out needing an RMA with no signs of it dying before it happened. both vertex and vertex 2 drives. didn't even last a year (or 6 months if i remember correctly). my intel G1s lasted over 2 years is raid0 before i reinstalled on them because i upgraded to a SB.

I hear ya. Bad experiences can linger on and taint the picture for quite a while afterwards. I'm on the opposite end with no issues whatsoever with more than 40 drives purchased from them(8 running on this machine alone). Also have 8 other family members without issues either(although I scoped compatibility issues ahead of the purchases to avoid the Sandforce beta-testers hassles).

I still see people RMA'ing drives running from mobo's/laptops that have known Sandforce compatibility issues. Then they wonder what's up after the new drive panic locks again. There are also many users who switch brands thinking it's the mfgrs fault only to find that the other Sandforce controlled drives do the exact same thing.

We all know by now that PC's in general have sort of a "good known recipe" thing going on with various hardware/drivers. Problem with Sandforce is that another mess of bios/sleep problems gets pushed into the mix and many don't know what to make of it. The newest Vertex 2 1.32 firmware has helped many so far but it still appears that Sandforce has some more work to do.

Luckily the V3 is off and running with all the known V2 fixes from the start. Still doesn't seem to be perfect but I've not seen 1 RMA yet with most issues coming down to Gigabytes screwy bios settings on the P67's so far. Time will tell but it's far different so far on this new model.

Has anyone seen what kind of speeds that Vertex 3 120gb can attain in raid0 on a P67 board and on the intel controller?
I was running 2 F80 Corsairs in raid0 that was faster then my single V3 120gb.

I sold the Corsairs due to no trim in raid. I would rather run raid and have to clean and reinstall every 6 months for more speed.

Thanks, looks like im going to get a second V3.

Hopefully GC at idle will keep it clean enough for awhile.

Will trim ever be made to work in raid0?

yes. 2 x 120GB V3's.

Cool. What would be nice is to see the same benchmark with only a single V3 120g drive. I'm curious if it scales 100%, and where.

The egg will have them in stock tomorrow, I guess it's time to find some external dock/enclosures for some of my drives to make room for these. I like those dual slot cell phone style hdd docks I've seen. Although I'm confused that it seems to have only one eSata/USB 3.0 output and 2 drive slots. I wonder what's faster, the USB 3.0 or eSata Port.

I guess I need to wipe my 2 other raids too because for some reason the controller is saying "Error Occurred" on 2 of the 4 drives on the startup screen, and on the Intel RST software thing. The OS is on this drive, and the data seems fine.. I'm guessing its tainted from running a pre B3 P67 mb.
