The whispers are that this is the final page in the Ed Burke vs. Richard Daley power struggle that has been going on for decades, the appellate judges that voted against Rahm owe their positions to Burke. Burke is looking to take control of the city by having a weak mayor and most of the aldermen in his back pocket. Daley squashed the city council for the last two decades and largely made it do his bidding, Rham would do the same. Daley has probably called in 30 years worth of political markers to make sure Rahm makes it.

the funny thing is, Obama is no part of the Chicago machine. He pissed off every single part of that machine during his state and then federal campaigns. he never received a ringing endorsement from Daly (who always hated Obama), Blagojaviches, Sharpton, Jackson, et al.

it's funny when outsiders who know dick about Chicago like to assume that Obama was part of that when it couldn't be further from the truth.

Nobody receives a ringing endorsement from Daley. His general silence on Rahm's candidacy versus his dings at the other candidates is about as close as anyone has come.

The Daley - Obama relationship can't be that bad since Obama has relied heavily on chicagoans who are connected and Bill Daley moves up to replace Rahm.

What most people don't seem to understand is that the "Chicago Machine" isn't a single monolithic construct. Certain parts have their own, possibly quite different, agendas.

probably because that race was a federal race and the US Constitution sets the requirements for eligibility to run for House and Senate seats.

Edit: as I recall, Obama lost his primary race for a House seat against Bobby Rush. Then, he ran for US Senate and managed to win the Democratic nomination because the top contender imploded due to scandal (and of course the Republican nominee as well). Obama did get Jesse Jackson Jr. endorsement for what it is worth.

yes, the south is very different form the north in Chicago politics, and Obama alienated them both. As well as the various unions and districts etc...

It was a long road for all of that, though. Jackson/Sharpton were firmly opposed to Obama during and after his race with Bobby Rush. he was more of the progressive candidate, while Rush was the "keep us blacks where we are and our politics where they have always been" candidate--like Jackson and Sharpton have always been. They outright resented Obama for trying to be the black politician with a message very different than their civil-rights era foundation.

Daley was not really a fan of Obama during the 04 campaign, and he did not immediately endorse him during the presidential campaign. IIRC, he was always a Hillary guy.

there was a super excellent New yorker article a few years ago on Obama's political career with all of the dirty details that you can expect. Also a really well-done Frontline documentary. He pretty much alienated himself by not seeking the endorsements that he was "expected to seek" as an up-and-coming Chicago politician. Tons and tons of resentment from the machine(s). He really is the most un-Chicago politician to come out of the city.

yes, but there was 4-6 years between the House seat and Senatorial campaign. The loss to Rush was humiliating. He was teaching constitutional law at U of C during that time, and then the seat on the state legislature. It was that first campaign that really turned Jackson Sr and Sharpton against him.

Please say what you mean. Politicians have been helping their fellow political allies since the time of dirt. But pulling strings has an implied illegal connotation word coloring.

If you are implying Obama is doing anything illegal to help Ramn, then please identify precisely where?

Ya, the Dissent mentions exceptions to the Law and one part was about not being in the State due to doing things for the "Public Good". Elected Officials(and others) are covered by that part.
