Rage...No Transcode option?

Am I missing something?...I have a quadcore 2600k and 580 gtx sli. Yet, the in-game options does not offer gpu transcode?...granted, I am using only the 275, so is this an option only with the beta drivers or is my install borked? (lastest Steam patch, if that make a difference)...Thanks

why are you not using the beta drivers? correct me if I am wrong but it has been mentioned over and over that you need those drivers for best experience in RAGE.

other than that I think the game patch accidentally caused some Nvidia cards to lose the transcode option.

I know, even steam advises use of the beta drivers --- just waiting for the official release I guess-- losing the transcode option may justify waiting a bit longer (assuming the patch was flawed)?..or perhaps not...in any event, the whole release of this game it just as bad (or perhaps) worse than crysis 2.

Hoping for Dice/BF3 to come through -- but at this point would not be surprised if that turns out to be mess too.

why are you waiting for official release drivers? Nvidia hardly ever releases those and they are not any better than their typical beta drivers. the current beta drivers are there for you to properly run BF 3 and RAGE so use them.

will give them a go...but has transcode been removed?....just curious if there is something wrong with my setup...some posts in other threads seem to indicate the option has been removed, others still have it...confused. But will give the beta drivers a spin. Thanks.

well I was on Steam yesterday and saw people saying transcode was removed with the patch yet others with the gpus saying it was still there for them. it might have been related to the driver they were using or it could have just been random. I do not actually have RAGE myself but like to keep myself a little bit informed by going to the forums every now and then.

Then my info will just add to the confusion since its still available and I have it enabled on my wifes GTX470.

EDIT:Just a thought, I removed my custom config before applying the update...not sure if it mattered or not though.

It was removed for me, and I run 570 SLI. I'm actually still using the same config pre patch so maybe that has something to do with it, but its running smooth enough so I see no reason to remove it.

If you're comparing this to Crysis 2 then nothing must be wrong. C2 had to be the most overblown ordeal in PC gaming I've seen in a long time. It worked fine and I had no issues. Then the patch came out (relatively quickly) and made it even better.

What exactly is the benefit of GPU transcode in Rage?

For years people have been scratching their heads and wondering how to take advantage all the hundreds and thousand of processor cores being added to modern computers. Rage leverages them for bandwidth and can theoretically use up to 24 cores on a cpu to decompress the textures or switch the task to a cuda graphics card and get by with a dual core cpu. Its so flexible and efficient with compressing textures to maximize bandwidth that you can play the game on an iPhone, while uncompressed the textures are so large you need an industrial computer to run them.

I run 2 x 9800GT in SLI on a dual core E6600 and the GPU Transcoding option was available in the 280.26 WHQL Official drivers and then later when I upgraded to the 285.38 beta drivers for BF3 / Rage.

I noticed no difference / improvement (or slowdown) by enabling / disabling this option.

Then, when the Steam PC patch was released on Saturday, this option dissappeared for me and was replaced with Anisotropic Filtering option and Texture Cache options.

The nVidia documentation suggested that only Geforce 500 series GPU's would benefit but I don't know if this was them just trying to get people to upgrade. I tend to agree with them that you need a newer, more modern GPU with several hundred CUDA Cores to take advantage of it which is probably why it disappeared for me. (although it also did for Childs up above w/ dual GTX 570)

You can still force the GPU Transcode with the launch option

As noted above I have a pair of 580's in sli -- they must have just removed the option with the latest patch --- however, performance really does suck with 275 drivers (4x AA, large textures @ 1080p and I get 40 - 50 fps...also seems very "stuttery" and not fluid at all) ..gotta try the beta's. Might be best to wait a few weeks to see if ID and ATI/NV can sort out this mess.

Have you tried running just one card? I'm doing fine with a single 560Ti -- I thought that RAGE doesn't support SLI.

have not tried disabling sli...I should give that a try I suppse, but I guess I'm a whiner as as I refuse to play this game until they get all this cr@p sorted out and it runs on sli maxed out

I want to try the betas...but in the NV forums they are saying that the "official" drivers should be out on or before the 25th for BF3 --- but as others have pointed out there really is no diff between the beta's and the whql's -- still, I think I will wait a bit.

it takes like 2 minutes to dl and install them so I do not understand what you are waiting for. you could have already played the game instead of siting around waiting for an official driver.

The Steam forums suggest that the GPU transcoding option is disabled for users who have SLI or multiple GPU's in their computer. Only after the latest patch is installed, however.
