Did you really just city yahoo answers?

Skyrim (actually, all TES games since III) can run quite unpredictably, even on similar setups. I have next to no drops in FPS going from wilderness to towns, and this is through multiple playthroughs. Having spent countless hours modding and supporting Oblivion, I can honestly say I'm not surprised some people have issues, but for me and many more people, we're proof those problems are not universal.

Should also note I've had very little drop in fps while heavily modding the game with what mods were available up through the middle of January.

Thank you for basically proving my point.

That YouTube video you linked to? In Whiterun? I experience nothing like that. That is noticeable slowdown, something I have yet to see.
Sucks if it happens for you.

Sorry if you don't believe me, I'll upload my own YT video if you'd like, but stop assuming that everyone has the same problem, to the same extent. They don't.

K, you can call whatever you want, but I just loaded it up again specifically to run through those cities, and while there are minor hiccups here and there lasting a second or two, saying it's like having a train pull up outside your house is simply ludicrous. There'll be a slight dip here or there (although, in Solitude, there was absolutely nothing), but in response to the previous guy who said:

But you proved his point with the bold. You noticed the slow downs. As you'd notice a train pulling up outside your house. Haha.

It's sort of schematics, but you didn't disprove what he was saying. I can translate it more as "sure, I saw the train pulling up in front of my house but it didn't bother me."

Just...no. Unless it's terribly noticeable or impacts gameplay that's just utter hyperbole.

On my HD 5870 (it's so oooollld) I'd drop from 80-90 FPS to 30-40FPS, that's more than half, and I'd quantify that as "massive dump" but I wouldn't say it broke the game for me, since I was usually just walking through a town, however recent example: Batman: AC @ launch with DX11 mode on - that was a "masive dump" that impacted gameplay greatly since it would happen during combat.

Exactly. In no way am I saying that the game is unplayable, but there are definately reproducable areas in the game that have terrible slowdowns if you try to exploit it. That was my point. I can and have repeated it on my 3 machines and all of my friends. For him to claim it doesn't exist is utter nonsense. It is widely documented. Now is it somethinng that happens all over the place and plague every area of the game? No.

The trouble is that in the areas that it happens neither the cpu or gpu are taxed. So what causes this? The fact that the game isn't loading cpu properly.

Id posted a notice on the Official Bethesda bulletin board that the release notes for the patch are incorrect. The new texture details option actually requires a hex core cpu instead of a quad core.

I ran the transcode benchmark with the system in my sig (3960X @ 4.3GHz) and get a score of 163. The game stutters like crazy when I enable detail textures. This is with Tri-Fire HD7970s. I get great performance with it off. Texture streaming is nearly non-existant when I force 16K textures through a config file. Having 3GB of video memory on each card helps.

We had one guy on the Bethesda forums suggest the following can double your benchmark:

jobs_numThreads 'X' - number of threads to use for the game - defaults to 2. If set to 4, the score should pretty much double (assuming you have 4 or more cores), halve at 1 et.c. This setting should be lower than the amount of physical cores in your processor (ideally: half the amount, rounded down) while playing however, as a setting of exactly the amount of cores in the processor will cause significant performance drops and/or freezes while playing as the entire CPU will be busy.

vt_splitTranscodeJobs 'X' - (either 0: OFF or 1: ON). This will split the transcoding jobs into two threads per page. Seems to be an optimization for hyperthreaded processors (various Intel i7 processors, Xbox 360's Xenon CPU) - disabling seems to improve performance on my AMD cpu (jobs_numThreads 1: 16 (on) vs. 23 (off), jobs_numThreads 2: 32 (on) vs. 46 (off), jobs_numThreads 3: 47 (on) vs. 67 (off), jobs_numThreads 4: 53 (on) vs. 74 (off)).

I've about had it with Rage. It looks like ass, and runs like crap. I regret spending $15 on it.

I haven't even played it yet, since downloading during Steam Holiday sale, it has been unable to launch for me. I guess this patch (which I noticed last week) will change nothing for me?

...and it sounds like my "dinosaur" of a machine will take a beating from Rage: Phenom II 965 BE, 5850, 16 GB DDR3?

le sigh...

Dunno. Machine in my Sig runs it decently. I haven't played it yet but it runs and plays fine with a decent framerate.

you shouldn't have a hard time playing it. Hell even my 8800GT plays the game at maxed setting on a 1440x 900 res at pretty much 60fps at all times

Finally got around to playing Rage today, and I must say, that bicupic up sample thing really does improve the look of the textures. Not significantly mind you, but it's definitely noticeable.

The bad thing about the patch though, is that GPU transcode no longer seems to be working, and as a consequence, my CPU usage has shot through the roof.

I've seen my CPU usage shot up to as high as 85%, and thats with HT enabled! 😱

Ah, well. tried to launch Rage again after the update.

And, yet again: CTD on launch.

fuck it. I have no desire to update drivers right now, assuming that's the issue (well over a year old, I'm thinking.)

If Skyrim ain't broke right now, then I ain't touching my drivers. :colbert:

This line of thinking baffles me. You have drivers that are a year old!! Rage required new drivers from both camps to play. It's not like Skyrim is going to perform worse, drivers will be optimized for that too.

A friend of mine is still using windows 95. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. :whiste:

Came here to check if it's worth the $14.99 (on Steam Daily Specials). 14 hours to go.
Looks like I should hang on to my money. Bugs/performance issues aside, don't think the genre itself interests me that much either. Maybe I should look up some Youtube playthroughs to get a feel for the gameplay.

(i5 750, Radeon 5850, 12GB)

While there are issues in both camps from what I understand AMD/ATI has considerably more of those issues. I'd steer clear if you have one unless you like gambling your $15 on a chance it might work.

mmmm cant get gpu transcode to work on 580GTX's in Tri SLI.... it says its not supported or i dont have enough memory... :\

i dont notice any difference in the game after patches...

Gah i cant stand rage... i get motion sickness from it... and whats funny is its the only game i get motion sickness on thats a FPS.

I, too, have a 5850, with phenom II.

I haven't been able to get Rage to launch since purchasing in December. Of course, I haven't updated vid drivers in more than a year.

....I'll get around to it some time.

(the attempt to launch Rage, initially, occurred on the same night that Skyrim finished downloading. ...so, I haven't had much reason to give a damn about Rage, heh. and the recent patch has not fixed that problem)

Back on topic, I just finished RAGE today.

Overall, meh. I'd give it a 7 out of 10. It's just so damn generic. The "post-apocalyptic wasteland of the future" with roving bands of bandits and nomads, and an evil, authoritarian government is just soooo damn cliche as to be almost a parody. I realize nobody plays ID shooters for story, but when everything else is just so drab and "blah" as well, it doesn't help when the story is too.

Performance wise though, I didn't have any trouble whatsoever. Ran everything maxed, 4x AA at my native 1680x1050, and never experienced any slowdowns. Game overall looked excellent, but the texture issues, as well as the noticeably static/prerendered backgrounds weren't exactly awe-inspiring.

Overall a decent enough game if it's on sale and you're looking for a thoroughly linear, predictable FPS. Other than that, *shrug*

I work in a molecular lab and with work and my lifelong experience with computers, one mantra holds steady: if it ain't broke, don't fix it. ...in various derivations.

as it applies to Rage--not "broke enough." Once I really want to fix Rage, I will get around to it.

Though, if I were to discover that latest drivers will reduce some of the choppiness with Skyrim and HD texture pack and such.... :hmm:
