My dad and I just started restomodding a 66 Mustang, and we need to pick a radio so that we can potentially make some cuts in the dash. Don't need anything especially fancy, and preferably something that won't stick out like a sore thumb. Any ideas? Any comments on the whole restoration process?

Most of the Mustang restoration parts suppliers have modern stereos made to fit the original dash. Try National Parts Depot or the Paddock they should have what you need.

I never understood the love affair with keeping a stupid double din radio in a resto mod. I have a 66 mustang coupe 200cui 6cyl with a nice single din pioneer cd player in it and 6x9's in the rear deck and two 3.5" speakers in the dash, sounds great! I used a 1/2" radio trim metra part #89-30-0500 to let the radio blend in better to the ridges in the dash and to cover any of my poor cutting... looks pretty sharp.

Because some people don't want to cut a perfectly good dash for a radio.

You could always get this and hook up a CD changer and/or iPod to it. It even says it can handle satellite radio. If I were doing a Mustang restoration I'd want it to look original, you can hide all the modern stereo stuff in the glove box or under the dash so you still have good sound with modern listening options.

It's not a double din....post pics so we can critique your's.

I used a Kenwood KDC-8001 in mine.

Wow. I didn't realize so many people around here had classic Mustangs.

One suggestion I've heard are mounting a multi-CD changer (with AUX input and remote) in the glove box and keeping the other radio for a stock look.

You could also consider something like this: http://www.mustangsunlimited.com/itemdy00.asp?T1=CAR3+01. It's relatively expensive for what you're getting (since you're paying primarily for "classic" looks), and doesn't have a CD player, but it does have an AUX input for your MP3 player.

The Custom Autosound selection seems nice and reasonably priced but do your research. They are junk. Go to any Mustang forum and you will find that most people hate this company and have bad luck with anything bough from them.

Everyone I know that had one had it break. The one in my T-Bird didn't last long. It failed under warranty and the replacement one failed shortly after the warranty period was up.....although the tape deck failed before but by that point I didn't care anymore.

If you don't want to cut your dash then keep the stock radio for looks and get a head unit that has the ability to have an external remote receiver connected and install the head unit in the glove box and mount the remote receiver under the dash so you can control the unit easily while driving.

I have no problem cutting a dash on a restomod but I won't on a restored car. If you have a full length center console you can also install the head unit behind the door inside the console if you are creative.

You just need to be creative and do what suits your needs but don't be afraid to cut the dash. You can buy the steel patch plates, or keep several old metal dash sections around like I do. It is not hard to fix if you ever want to go back. No more than a weekend's worth of work and no one could ever tell you ever cut the dash in the first place unless they crawled underneath.

I like this idea a lot. It is currently missing the stock radio, so I wonder if one of those can be picked up relatively inexpensively? I don't want to deal with one of the modern ones if they have so many issues. And those are pretty much the only two options if I want it to look stock at all.

Check Craigslist and similar sites and find people selling junk $500-800 Mustangs. Offer to buy their radio for like $20-30.
