Radeon X850XT vs Geforce 6800GS XXX edition

Recently, the prices on the X850XT have dropped quite a lot, and it sells for 200 bucks on Newegg. At the same time, I found another gfx card, the XFX 6800GS XXX edition, which is clocked at 485/1100. I've read reviews of both, and both seem to be good cads, but there hasn't been a single instance where they've gone head to head.

The Geforce can do HDR, unlike the X850XT, and is SM3.0 compliant. The X850XT, on the other hand may be the faster card-The X850XT gets about 6100 marks in 3DMark05 while the 6800GS XXX edition gets about 5800 marks.

So which one would be a better buy overall?

Get the X850XT if possible. The Geforce 6800GS is not strong enough to use HDR in most circumstances unless you like 1024*768 or lower: http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/far_cry_1.3/page3.asp

Dude, the 6800GS that I'm talking about beats or equals the 6800 Ultra in many cases, and according to the link you gave, HDR is playable on the 6800 Ultra upto 1600x1200 res.

just barely playable and the 6800GS XXX edition does not beat the 6800 ultra. where did you get that info from? Get the X850XT, as it's faster than both.

What about HDR? Many new upcoming games use HDR, and I am told (never experienced it myself), that HDR makes a game extremely realistic. Can the X850XT do HDR? I know it could do it in HL2-Lost Coast, but in most others like Far Cry, Splinter Cell, only SM3.0 cards can do it.

the XFX 6800gs is a great card, i had one OC'd to 520/1180, but your really can't compare to the 6800gs to the x850xt. the x850xt is the better performer of the two, and with a price of $154 AR makes it one hell of a deal.

are you basing "playable" at 30fps? even if so, the 6800ultra is getting slightly below that, and the 6800gs should be a tad slower as well. not to mention that the reviews rarely show the lowest fps meaning that the card will probably not run the game at that constant speed...probably slower in a lot of parts. also far cry is now a pretty old game, considering the performance on some newer games (like cod2 and fear)...the cards can't do more than 1280 res w/o hdr...with hdr i'm pretty sure it'll drop to 1024 res if not lower. so you might as well just pick the fastest possible (and the x850xt should oc a lot as well).

Not only will you get HDR, but also SM3.0, Purevideo & SLI.

Get the GS.
