Radeon X800XL

My Radeon X800XL graphics card gets so hot that it will shut down after several minutes of mediocre gaming. I haven't overclocked it or done anything to it, yet ATI tool says it is over 100 degrees celsius when gaming, and almost 60 idle! I have mildly fixed the problem by removing the case side, and placing a floor fan blowing on it, although it still is about 92-93 when gaming, and still freezes/shuts down sometimes. What is going on? It didn't used to run like this, six months ago.

Can anyone explain this?

Help would be appreciated.

Yeah, from what I can tell it is working just fine.
Um...

Can you expand on that statement, please?

Sound like it isn't working at all, to me...

Sorry, what I meant was that it LOOKS like it is connected correctly, even if it obviously isn't doing its job. I don't know how a heatsink would just quit working, but it kindof appears like that's the problem.

Heatsinks don't quit working but the fans on them do, and there is a good chance that's whats happening here. If the fan is on it's way out I would suggest the Zalman VF-700 as the replacement.

The fan is still working too. Honestly, it might just be time to upgrade to a new gpu... I don't really want to spend any more money on such an outdated card.

Yeah, I'd toss that sucker!

Who knows what's going on?!?!?

Life is too short, you know? 😉

It may be working but it may not be working at 100%. Fans rarely if ever just stop, then normally slowly die and as they do loose speed.

The VF-700 and 900 are also cross compatible with just about every card out there so you would be able to carry it over to a new card. Besides even if you want to replace the card a x800 still has enough value that it would be worth fixing in my opinion.

Vin, if I was going to spend that much, I might as well get an 8800 GTS.

Operandi, you may be right. Maybe a fan can hold me over until the 8800 goes down in price.
