Radeon x1950Pro AGP Issues

Recently bought one of these to get a couple more years out of my ageing system. Aware of the fairly high power requirements, but thought I would chance it to see if I could avoid a PSU upgrade.

Installed - no problems, but when I tried running Oblivion, it crashed at the loading screen. Tried HL2, Q4, D3 all to no avail.

Using the Catalyst control centre, the 3D preview window shows nothing, then the program shuts down. All of the other Catalyst settings are fully functional.

My PSU show 20A on the 12v rail, so this is the obvious cause.

The question is, before I upgrade my PSU, is this likely to be the cause or is my card fried? 2D mode is A OK.

Thanks.

The rail amperage could be the problem, but I also read that people upped the voltage to their cards from the default 1.5 to 1.6 through their BIOS. There are reports of people with 20amps on their 12v rail and claiming success with the card, power supply quality could be a deciding factor there.

I was suspicious of possible high temps but if it consistently crashes that fast in all games, then I would more strongly be leaning towards a power issue.

Tried stepping the AGP voltage up to 1.8v, to no avail.

Anyone recommend a good PSU with high ampage on the 12v rail?

I've got an ATX mobo, ATA HD and AGP graphics. Currently got an X-Power 500w PSU with 20A on the 12v rail, looking for 30A+.

Thanks.
