Radeon x1900xtx vs Nvidia 7950GX2

Hi, which would you recommend for an Intel Core Duo E6600, 2gb ram, Asus P5W DH and currently a 1280x1024 17" which will be upgraded to 19" (possible 21") Please note that the Radeon is around £100 less in this case. It needs to last until Christmas 2007 comfortably as I will spend the extra money to keep perfomance till then (when I will upgrade to DX10) if I need to...

Thanks a bunch in advance 🙂

Joe

Oblivion, BF2, FEAR, CSS, Command And C... are the main ones

(On a side note how does a SATA 74 GB HARD DISK @ 10000rpm 16mb cache compare to a SATA 2 320 GB 7200rpm 8mb cache for perfomance?)

Thankyou again 😀

Joe

I think ATI is better for gaming...i have the x1900xt and it runs all those games on High and oblivion on ultra high so i'm happy 🙂

Awesome, thanks for the reply 🙂 Guess an x1900xtx is what im gonna go for...

How about the HD comparison? Any opinion on that? Thanks!

Joe

haha what the fvck? Since ATI is better for gaming, Nvidia's cards and the 7950gx2 are good only for moderate web surfing and maybe solitaire at lower resolutions.... wait what? My own exaggeration aside, what sort of nonsense is that "I think ATI is better for gaming"?

.... and based off of one asinine post you're going to spend a couple hundred dollars? At least wait for some posts with real information in them before choosing a card. Both companies make great cards that are great for gaming, but wait until you actually know why they're both good for gaming, first.

I highly suggest you start scouring the web for reviews of the 7950gx2 (which more often than not will pit it directly against the x1900xtx/xt, amongst other cards) and see if the performance increase (if there is one) is worth the extra money to you. Look around on nvnews.net or rage3d.com and see what sort of issues people are having with either card and gauge which is the better value overall. Asking people on these forums is going to be almost always a 50/50 split between nvidia and ati cards, regardless of the situation of the person asking for advice. If you really, really haven't got a clue, then those sorts of questions can help, but in your case it sounds like you know what you want (a card that can handle high-res gaming for some time to come) and so I suggest you go solo on your research. Good luck.

If you are planning on going above 1600x1200 with your monitor, which it seems you will

Go for the 7950GX2 (and not because I own one) 🙂

if you go the x1900xtx go the x1900xt - you can attain the same speed as the x1900xtx, also running oblivion on either card (7900gtx/x1900xt) will get you ~43 fps - in crossfire/sli

atm the ati stuff is a better price/performance ratio but they do use more power and put off more heat so there is a trade off.

imo ati=nvidia in gaming, both do an excellent job.

The 7950GX2 does NOT run hotter than a 1900XTX

And it doesnt have an advantage over the XTX in many games? Uhm OK

Maybe a couple games the XTX might come close to matching, but the GX2 hands down is faster overall.

Well I've owned both Nvidia cards and ATI cards...from my personal experience i find ati to be better for gaming...i'm sorry if you disagree. I'm not bashing either company as both are comming out with top of the line graphics cards...also yes you should definately research before spending the money. I can tell you that I have the x1900xt and i am very happy with it so take it as you want

At least the 7950 won't flicker.

X1900XTX = flickerpissnosecum. :laugh:

<- YDKJ player. 😛

Actually the X1800XT I had for a short while did it too but I had no idea it was so serious (as in faulty hardware design) as the card freaking BLEW UP!

I'll give ATi another chance with a 1950. If that one has the same problem it's going to grow wings and fly.

at that resolution the xtx will be great. you do not want dual gpu for 12x10, even the x1900xtx will be good at 1600x1200 and will play any game on max

Get the Seagate 7200.10 320GB SATA2, the Raptor 74GB 10k you are thinking of is only marginally faster, costs twice as much and has ~1/4 the space, makes no sense.

I assume the 21" LCD will have a higher res than what you have now, right?

Both cards are overkill at 1280x1024. Even my lowly 18 pipe 7800gs AGP can handle most games perfectly at that res.

Don't waste your money unless you are willing to go 1600x1200+.

Thanks for your reply all, based on your advice and some benchmarks for 1280x1024 i think the ATI x1900xt would be more than enough.

Thanks

Joe

Awesome 🙂

(Im guessing its not worth it to get a 1900xtx instead? Just making sure =p)

Joe

ps: thanks all who answered!

I thought we had resolved this already.

Only get the XT, you do not need the additional X.

Agree - 1900XT fine for your needs (it's running just fine for me @1920x1200). If the XTX's are selling for the same price as the XT's, you may as well get one. If they're still more expensive, don't bother. XT's probably best "bang for your buck" at this point. Yes, 7950 may be a better card, but it's x2 the price.
