Looking the 1030 and the 550(4GB) cards at Newegg I notice that they are nearly the same price but the 550 has 4GB with 128 bit memory while the 1030 only has 2GB and 64 bit memory. So the Rx550 should have better performance right? Not that I'm buying either, but I'm just wondering.

May I ask your system specs?

If you don't care about the slightly higher total system power consumption, the RX 550 will be a faster card. I would recommend that over the 1030.

The 1030 is an easier card to recommend for most users in that it is basically guaranteed to work on older systems with really weak power supplies.

Both these cards have pretty poor performance/$ right now due to higher end cards being sold at lower prices. If your PC is powerful enough, I would vote RX 570 4GB which is often on sale; assuming you plan on playing games.

Newegg Ebay has a decent 570 new:

The equivalent I would compare to the 570 is the GTX 1060 3GB.

Well I have a GTX 970 now but maybe for someone who doesn't want to spend a whole lot of money for a dGPU but wants modern codecs and/or video ports. Perhaps for 4K video watching or light gaming. Doesn't Netflix at 4K require 3GB of VRAM due to the DRM they use?

But I do agree with you about both dGPUs being overpriced considering that these are low end cards. On thing that is flavor of the 550 is that the drivers are FOSS.

Honestly, I doubt I could tell the difference in performance between the 1030 (not the DDR4 one) and the 550. The 4GB model of the 550 is kind of expensive, which ruins its value.

Unfortunately, the 3GB requirement for 4k Netflix eliminates cheaper options.

Coincidentally, I would also struggle telling the performance difference between the 970 and 570!

Personally I think video cards should come with 4GB minimum but that is just me. If my 970 dies on me for some reason then assuming if I couldn't afford any thing better I would get the 570 *8GB to replace it.

1030 2gb is better because gddr5 not to mention the core itself is much more powerful. RX550 is pure garbage. Maybe the gddr5 550 will be better but 1030 is still more powerful.

From benchmarks, it looks like the 550 is faster than the 1030, albeit a small amount. This is gddr5 vs gddr5. The 550 looks to be at least 10% faster.

I think both cards are priced far too high compared to the 570 4GB, which is far faster.

But there is a reason MX150 (1030) is so popular, it is incredibly power efficient.

The 3GB requirement is NV only. The 2GB RX550 is currently the cheapest card with 4K Netflix support.

The 550 is only available with GDDR5. Performance wise, it's a wash.

Be careful when purchasing a GT 1030 as there is a DDR4 version out now and I've noticed its not always well labeled on even newegg. Worse, its not even any cheaper than the GDDR5 version. It performs significantly worse though.

I believe you should take a second look at the RX 550 4GB (GDDR) vs GT1030 2GB (GDDR) , the RX 550 4GB is faster especially in DX-12 and Vulkan games.

No doubt that RX550 is better GPU than 1030.
Rx550 is more costlier than 1030 but if I find them for almost same price then I will definitely consider buying RX550

Actually, its a much worse GPU because much the biggest market for these is in laptops & the 1030 wins by a country mile there. As a desktop GPU, well, whatever :)

TBH, I wouldn't buy either one of them as I do want more performance then what these two provide. But for someone who wants to update an older system then they are fine. But I advise the 550 over the 1030 due to 4 GB of memory vs 2GB.
