Radeon RDNA / Navi DC performance and compatibility thread (RX 5700/XT, for now)

Just picked up an RX 5700 reference blower (XFX) model from BestBuy here in the States, it was marked down to $289.99. (IMHO, fire-sale pricing to get rid of the reference card models, since the AIB models are pretty much universally better.)

But assuming it's going to be reliable, and the drivers mature, under $300 for 2060 Super or better performance (at least for Windows gaming, not sure about F@H) didn't seem like a bad deal.

I'd love to see how it does in DC and will be watching this thread. The only current AMD GPU that I'm aware performs well in F@H is the Radeon VII, which is out of my price range.

Oh, sigh, they still haven't gotten their OpenCL issues worked out yet? It's been like two months since release, hasn't it?

Confirmed.
AMD Navi based cards do not work with the current core. OpenMM 7.4 has the changes to work with them. Until we have a core based on it, they will not work correctly.

The new Navi 5700 and 5700XT are useless for compute currently. The drivers are not ready for compute. All projects that rely on AMD OpenCL drivers are producing nothing but garbage results and invalids. The AMD developers and the Khronos group are aware of the problem but not a peep from either of them about what the real problem is or when to expect a fix. In the meantime, I think those cards should be banned until the drivers are fixed for all projects.

@VirtualLarry any updates on support? Trialed my 5700 yesterday and errored out consecutively but I'm not on the latest Adrenaline drivers.

F@H doesn't seem like it's black-listing the RX 5700 family of cards any more, but even with the 19.12.1 drivers, it still errors out immediately, consecutively.

Seems like Navi support may have to wait for the next F@H software update, "FAHCore_22 ."

Thanks both of you. I'll keep waiting.

I can get by with WCG and Rosetta cancer projects, but my 6 year old son loved the F@H demo folding visualization.

Are there any other good cancer research DC projects with visualizations that can use the RX5700?

Sadly, GPU Grid is Nvidia only for now (been waiting for years for AMD support).

GPU projects seem to shrink yearly. Truly a shame! Worse, many project seem to favor Nvidia's CUDA due to ease of programming I suppose.

Projects that shine on Radeon:

Milkyway: help map a 3d MOVING image of the galaxy.
Einstein: "search for weak astrophysical signals from spinning neutron stars (often called pulsars) using data from the LIGO gravitational-wave detectors, the Arecibo radio telescope, and the Fermi gamma-ray satellite. "
Asteroids: Not sure on this one about AMD cards: Use observational data to predict shape(s) of known asteroids.

PS: @amrnuke nuke Welcome!!!! :)

Thank you, I'll give those a shot to see if it makes my son happy haha... he LOVES space anyway so as a filler until we get Navi support on F@H that might be good.

Would anyone with a Navi GPU be willing to test the new Adrenalin 2020 drivers with F@H please?

I’d love to fire mine up but I’m upgrading my memory and I sold my old sticks.

It's not a driver issue with F@H. A new core22 app compiled with a more recent version of OpenMM just went into beta testing today that will support Navi. We'll see how the beta testing goes.

You need to add an option to your GPU slot to 'client-type' 'beta' to get the core22 tasks (project number 11737).

It's Folding! My RX 5700, It's Folding!

Only around 500-550K PPD, but I assume that will improve on optimization. Or maybe not.

Edit: OK, I have 8 cores of my Ryzen R5 3600 CPU Folding, my RX 5700 @ -10% power level Folding, and my GTX 1660ti 'Gaming X' (no tweaks) Folding.

CPU == ~100K PPD, RX 5700 == ~515K PPD, GTX 1660ti == ~600K PPD. Total just over 1.2Mil PPD. Not to bad.

It would be great if Navi could be a viable Folding GPU! I wonder how much more they'll get out of it while in beta?
For reference, the RX 570 here is doing ~300K ppd, and my Vega 56 is doing ~650K ppd.

Does Vega out-shine Navi, for compute purposes? Or is F@H just not quite optimized yet for Navi? (I do have Power Limit set to -10% too.)

Well, I don't think too much in known about Navi at this point, for DC anyway. I'm interested to see how you and @amrnuke do, because I like AMD GPUs and would love it if they were more competitive in DC. As far as Folding goes, Vega and especially its 7nm successor Radeon VII are the only AMD GPUs that can put out serious numbers, so far. But Radeon VII is not competitive from a $/ppd perspective.

The chief thing I want (need) to know before using my 5700 on F@H is whether the beta client uses OpenCL on the 5700. If so, there are so many OpenCL issues on Navi that I'd hesitate to use it, for fear of contaminating the results.

I can't answer any questions, but I am thrilled to see AMD 'back in the game' for GPU's too! (even if it is 'only' GTX 1070 ((on linux)) levels of performance).

I wouldn't worry about it. That's why they are running the beta test.
