Radeon Overclocking

I thought I'd take a stab at overclocking my Radeon DDR. It's a new retail Radeon DDR 64MB VIVO from newegg.com. When I open up RadeonTweaker, it shows the speed at 198 (it's actually running at that speed, correct?). I tried bumping it up to 202, without making any other changes, but immediately get artifacts. Do I need to do something else to be able to overclock the card? From what I gather, others are overclocking, at least to a small degree, without a hitch.

BTW, once you begin getting artifacts, should you be able to set the speed lower and see them clear up, or does it always require a reboot to clear them? After munged attempts, I tried to set the speed back down to 150, but not all of the artifacts clear themselves, especially the mouse cursor.

I'm running Windows 2000 Pro sp2, on an Athlon running at 1480 (10 x 148). Will overclocking of the rest of the system have a negative affect on the ability to overclock the Radeon? The rest of the system is running rock solid with the overclocked FSB.

Thanks,
K

im not sure if 198 is the default speed, i thought it was lower than that. for most Radeons the limit is around 200 and above it ppl dont seem to have much gain. Rage3D has good info but the site seems to be down for the moment.

anyways your Radeon just might not be a good one like how some cpus dont over clock. but most of them should be ok for 185 at least.

you are not missing on too much tho, usually the gain of o/c is just around 10% in performance from my experience.

have fun~~~

When 198MHz is the default of your card, it means you have a Radeon SE. It's a higher clocked Radeon (normal OEM = 166MHz, retail = 183MHz). Most people are able to overclock the SE much more then just 4MHz (some even get it to over 250MHz) .. what OC program are you using?

About the artifacts, most of the time it does require a reboot. When you lower your clock no new artifacts are being produced, hower some that allready exist will remain visible until you reboot.

About your FSB speed, it is possible that is the cause you are not able to overclock your Radeon any further. Try lowering it (just for testing), or setting AGP4x to 2x (don't think that will make a difference but who knows ;) ) ..

I remember people discussing how you should set the memory timing and latency to slow for the SE models ....that will allow the card to o/c to around 230/230 or so....or more. I suggest rage3d tweak ....I use it for my LE ....but there are several good programs out there.

The normal clock for a DDR64 is 183Mhz. I believe your reading was the result of O/Cing the PCI. If your PCI was at 133 (or even close) you can push it to over 200 with no problems.
