Radeon literally exploded last night - Wait for RMA or just buy a new one?

My 9800 fan caught on fire and melted off last night, not sure how, but it did. It's within the warranty, but I'm halfway through Stalker and really want to not wait no the RMA, since I'm running a TNT2 PCI right now.

How long do these RMA's usually take? Should I just get a new AGP card instead, they're pretty cheap now.... meh

Ihave been reading a lot lately on 9800 cards dying. Most of the info I found was the fans dying, hence heating up and in your case, hot enough to burn the plastic.

Pics? :Q

You could always buy a newer card (AGP 6-series?) and sell the fresh-from-RMA card on FS/T later.

thats what i did when my card died awhile back, although i sold on Ebay, not FS/T

My old faithful 9800 died a few weeks ago, fan died finally I believe, or some kind of serious short happened as some of the transistors actually blew off the card.

But after 4 years, maybe a little more, worth of hard use she deserved a good rest.

Yeah, thats how mine died a coupla months ago. Lived a good life. Broke my heart to toss it.

My brother's 9800 pro is still going strong. It only had the stock cooler on it for a couple months though, he bought it brand new and later on put a zalman heatpipe cooler on it.

My little brother just bought a used 9800 pro to replace his patched-up GF2 ti, and the fan grinds some during the first minute or so then quiets down. Gonna be changing the cooler on it soon.

well i wish the TNT2 could cut it for that game 🙁. you could always buy a better card and just sell that puppy on ebay or here on teh forum. I had a 9800pro back in the day and that sucker was uber hot. got an aftermarket cooler because at stock speeds it was artifacting on doom 3. RIP ole' 9800.

hmmmm.... wonder if I should look at getting a fan replacement for my 9800 AIW Pro. Have had it for a while now, and with all the people posting here about them dieing now....

Wouldn't be a bad idea. 😉

I find it annoying that mfrs are putting really cheesy fans on $400 (then) cards. At least the ones on the newer high end cards (squirrel cage style) appear to be better than the prop fans.

I have a zalman heatpipe cooler on my 9800 pro and have no heat issues however I have a 9800 xt on the shelf due to fan failure might invest in a heatpipe cooler for a second pc

I thought it was around $320 when they were new?

The fan died on my 9800 Pro a month or so ago. Luckily I heard it crap out and shut the machine off. Replaced the stock heatsinc/fan combo with a copper replacement from CompUSA for $12.99. Back up and running! 🙂

I guess I'll just get a new card in the mean time, I don't want to wait months for a replacement. This TNT2 is not cutting it.

Can't speak to the 9800, but my 9700pro was $400. I bought it when it was released.

Yup. The 9700 almost looked like a hack for a finished product with that black heatsink and lousy fan. The 9800 had a better heatsink with small pins but the fan was tiny and frail. The 9800XT started the copper revolution I think. Still had a marginal fan. The smaller fans just can't take the heat and constant running at high speed. Bearing design is getting better though. Today's top of the line GPU needs at least a single heatpipe to prevent OHFS (open hearth furnace syndrome). :Q

The amount of power required is another thing too. I would not be surprised if we see a move to an outside configuration for the GPU.

Buy the most expensive card imaginable to compensate for your most grieving loss.... or sell it, and buy a mid-range card
