Radeon Le owners...please read!!! (engineer&old fart)

Has anyone notice a degredation since tweaking the hyper z on and boosting any of the mem or core speeds above the 148/148? It was fine for tuesday til thursday night, but not anymore.

I have a thread going now that outlines a problem that just started occuring to me after a day of 148/148 (no oc'ing). I get snow when I never saw it before...please read for background

I may rma this card monday and have them just upgrade it to the retail card or the 64 that runs at the higher clock speed...

Duvie,

I've been running mine 24/7 @ 183 MHz (up to 193) since I've had it. I've had no problems so far. I do have a Nidec blower blowing across the card to keep it cool though. My guess is, based on what you had in your other thread about only running once and a while overclocked, that the card may have been defective to begin with. I don't know how to cure the problems that you are having...I would RMA at this point, unless you can get another card (any brand) just to test your system out. 🙁

Yeah, I saw you post. Who knows what happened. Turning on HyperZ certainly would not cause a card failure. Maybe Powerstrip barfed and was running the card at 1480 instead of 148! Sometimes things just happen. I haven't heard of any other people having a card go belly up yet.

Whats odd is the amount of snow at lower 16bit settings and in low detail test on the 3dmark...same test at high detail as well as 32 bit ans higher resolutions less snow...also no snow at all in second test "adventure" of 3dmark 2000

Maybe this is software...

I did touch the ram chips with my figures...first chip is the hotest...does my ouching it somehow compromise its ability to cool?

What is odd is how it all changed...now I have to blast it with cooling to get 185/185 when I did nothing before...case is well cooled already

Duvie,

I ran my card on a 15 minute loop with 3DMark 2000 and then dumped the power quickly and touched the chips on the card. The ram chips were barely (I mean barely) warm and the heatsink on the Radeon chip was just a tad warmer. If you have a "pretty warm" or "hot" ram chip, then that chip may indeed be bad. Good Luck!

My Ram and Processor Chips on my Radeon LE are also very hot; I can overclock up to 190/190, but it gets *very* hot. (Almost too hot too touch) I haven't had snowing problems yet, though. Just my two cents.

Jtate, I would avoid 190/190 without more active cooling method...I RMA'd mine and will have a new one sent...I personally am not going above 183/183 until I add 4 ram sinks (9.00) and slap a fan on the heatsink. I use to go to 192/192 and the chips never got that hot, even the heatsink wasn't very hot...even now snow aside I push it to 185/185 which it will run only the first ram chip gets very hot the rest just warm.

Just beware...fps benefits in some articles some minor jumps from oc'ing 148 to 183 so don't kill it for 3dmark scores.

Oldfart, any clues on how to use 2 vid cards w/radeon? My tnt2 worked fine w/ a matrox #9 pci card, i put in the radeon w/newest drivers, on winME, now 3d won't work unless i take the pci card out! Any help?

Yeah, just be happy with a lower core/mem speed. I'm only running my ATI AIW Radeon at 183/183.

I think some of you overclockers are NUTS!! I know the card isn't exactly expensive, but why fry it like an egg and have to buy a second one? Be content with 166 and be done with it. It'd be nice to be able to resell that card in a year (or less) when RadII comes out, right? 🙂
Mine's gonna' have to last a good long time.
