Radeon LE help needed...

I will give you some background....

I had a radeon installed in a clean install/ format...worked beautifully...did reg hack and oc'd it to 185/185 (which I had for short time for testing but felt I would like additional cooling) performed beautifully...one day it started to show major artifacting at default speed and would just shut down monitor if I tried to jack settings to heights originally attained. Needless to say I rma'd it...

Got new one placed it in...not a clean install yet, but tried to clean registry very well...video was jerky in 3dmark2000 and noticed artifacts at 166...computer froze...felt chip not hot...let me restart immediately...tried it at 148/148 major artifacts.

Here is what I did..

Uninstalled 3dmark2000
Uninstalled Radtweak 4.3
UNinstalled Powerstrip 3.0 beta

(reboot)

Reinstalled direct x 8.0

(reboot)

Reinstalled 3dmark2000 (no powerstrip yet)
Ran default test fine (no artifacting)
Ran again with reg hack fine

Reinstalled powerstrip 3.0 beta
ran at 166/166 long test no artifacts but froze at end...


Cpu temps never got above 38 celsius...system temp 24 celsius...I have 4 case fans including a 120mm fan blowing right on the radeon from side of case...

Tbird 750 at time was oc'd to 825 at default voltage which it has always been and very stable in everything else...I believe I took it down during last card to 750 and it made no difference (ran oc'd fine for 1-1/2 weeks with rma card) ...

I have a 350 sparkle PSU...had a 250 PSU with the old rma'd card

What do you think it is?
Another bad card?
Bad voltage settings? ( i can't modify with my mobo)
pci is at 37mhz so 4x agp is at 296mhz...Too high?
Software conflicts?
Hardware conflict?
Should do a clean install only?

forgot to mention I am using 7089 drivers from www.rage3d.com...rma card used early drivers (1/12/2001 release?)

Go to www.rage3d.com for the a guide to installing the drivers. It is somewhat lengthy and tedious, but will insure a clean install.

I think it's the PowerStrip Beta that's messed up. I had PS beta too. While tinkering with the settings with Radeon, I remember screen would go bezerk sometimes. I stopped using it.

Try Humus' Raid-on Tweaker 4.3 at rage3d.com. It overclocks at startup too, plus 128x anisotropic filtering, and registry stuff. Only thing extra is PS beta offers custom res. for Radeon.

Arod, Should I go back to 7072 or 7075 drivers? I notice you have commented this worked the best for you....

I have to admit there are several tweaker programs still on HDD and may be causing some havok...

What is the best way to copy regedit hack to registry...I copied your regedit hack Arod but don't know hoe to get it in there.

Typing it manually or merging two .reg files would be the easiest way to do it. Personally, I just typed in each of the strings manually and it only took me about 5 mins. You want to put it in "current machine.....software.....ati.....drivers.....atxhaxl (or something) and then you should see some strings in there are about hyper-z. This is where you would want to add the strings and values.
