Radeon Installation Blues

I'm trying to install a Radeon 8500LE on an Epox 8K5A2. No matter what I do, when Win98 gets past the "splash" screen, I get nothing but a garbled pattern. I made sure windows was set to the generic VGA prior to installing the card. (Please spare all of us O/S flames..money's tight here!)

The prior card was a Matrox Millennium G400, which was running perfectly. I searched for and removed all files I could find related to the Matrox prior to installing the Radeon. Obviously, I'm missing something! I did a lot of research while waiting for the Radeon to arrive, and I've noticed many people advise a complete "reinstall" of Windows prior to switching video cards.

I even tried that with no results! But then I wondered....are they referring to a reformat and reinstall, or just a new installation of Windows?

I'd like to get this thing running....any help would be greatly appreciated!

By a "complete reinstall" you don't need to re-format, but you would need to delete the current Windows subdirectories and re-install it from scratch. This is my preferred method, as that way I keep my My Documents folder and other non-program files intact and just delete the rest. Just make up a boot disk and copy all the important files from the Windows Command directory (e.g. you'll find DELTREE is very helpful for removing the windows subdirectories from a DOS prompt - obviously, you can't delete windows from within it).

I had a similar problem when I upgraded a system once (i.e. hanging at the desktop). A fresh re-install solved my problem. Best of luck!
