If I want to buy a Radeon 9800 I heard the non pro version can be flashed/upgraded to a pro version. Trouble is, the newegg site lists 4 different 9800's. 9800, 9800 XT, 9800 SE, 9800 Pro. It's not the Pro, it's not the "SE" because I have heard those should be avoided (but I'm not sure why). So is the non-pro the XT, or the one with no suffix?

Is there anything else I should look for? I have heard I should try to get Samsung memory, but how do I know I'm going to get Samsung?

How much memory should I get? The 256mb cards are all over $400 which is too much. I might spend up to $250. I can't see spending more because these things get old fast. I will be using it in the system in my sig. It will replace a TI-4200, so I am looking for a good amount of performance upgrade. I can't say which game I will be playing because I am currently in-between games (DAOC sucks now, and no way in hell I'm going back to EverCamp). But I would like it to be viable for a few years if that's not asking too much.

Thanks

The 9800XT is the current top of the line 9800 card, which is why its so pricey. I don't know much about OC'ing them personally. I have a 9800Pro AIW and don't feel the need to bother. It was around $377 or so when I bought it. The 9800Pro can be had for around $300 these days. I would just scrounge up the extra $50 and get that.

Though if you decide to OC I am sure others that post in this thread can help you out. Best of luck.

Yes the order of cards is 9800XT, Pro, , SE. I have a 9800 Non pro but I cannot flash it to Pro due to it's infineon ram. The np's ship with either samsung or infineon ram. Infineon is slower rated ram with no head room really. I dont see the need to flash though as I am right now 430/333 from stock 324/290. This thing has tons of headroom and this is with stock cooling as well. The infineon ram is spec'd to do 333 which for the most part I havent seen too many people hit.
