Here's a few benchmarks comparing the stock clocked HD 7850 to an overclocked one:

Radeon HD 7850 Overclocked ( 1235/5700mhz ) vs. Stock - DiRT 3
Stock Average FPS = 61.25
Overclocked Average FPS = 83.67

Radeon HD 7850 Overclocked ( 1235/5700mhz ) vs. Stock - 3DMark 11
Stock Performance Preset Score = 5425
Overclocked Performance Preset Score = 6914
Highest Ever Achieved at 1245/5800mhz ( Not in video ) = 7,103

Radeon HD 7850 Overclocked ( 1238/5800mhz ) vs. Stock - Unigine Heaven

Stock Average FPS = 44.7
Overclocked Average FPS = 60.1

Prime95 full load for 8 hours. Highest temp was 63C. My i5-3450 was overclocked to 3.9ghz from 3.1ghz. Also, Ivy-Bridge CPU's when overclocked run hotter than Sandy Bridges.

oh i know that ;) thanks.
Also, I got that heat sink with two powerful 120mm fans and thermal paste for only $12.50 brand spanking new from Micro Center at Yonkers, NY. It was the LAST ONE TOO! Don't think they'll replenish the stock since it's a rather old yet highly effective CPU cooler. That was the deal of the year for me. Next up, is this $244 HD 7950, if you know what I mean. :D

I have a $244 HD 7950 that can't overclock. Still an amazing deal. :)

But which is better a $244 7950 that can't overclock or a $310 7970 that can't overclock? It's actually not even a fair comparison since a 7950 at 1200 core usually beats a stock 7970. Sorry if I'm raining on your parade :)

BTW, we've already got a little thread going on the overclocking capabilities of the 7850: http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2239216

This is why i switched out from a OC 7850 to an OC 7950. I'm getting a "stock" gtx680 performance for $330 thats quiet and running cool. Hard to argue vs that. ;)

So is your PCS+ cooler quiet even when overclocked at load?

I've been planning to get a 7850 when the prices go down, but the 7950 prices have come down so much that I might just stretch my budget a bit to get one of those. I don't upgrade my gpu very often (every 2-3 years), so having more speed and more VRAM would be really nice. I can't justify it right now because I don't have time to play games, but hopefully within a few months that will change.

Yeah its the quietest cooler for 7950. Its at 50-55% fan speed under max load, barely audible over my antec cooler which is very quite. Its a shame my PSU cant be pushed further, because this sample runs 1.125ghz at such low vcore, im certain it should hit 1.3ghz.

That's great to hear. I was thinking about getting the MSI Twin Frozr version, but some reviews talked about it getting loud when overclocked at load. I might just hold out for a good deal on the PCS+ version.

@Protomize

Looks like you have a 35-37% performance increase in Dirt3 and Unigine Heaven benchmarks.
Thats probably a good ~10% faster than a 580.

My HD 7850 was $244. Now overclocked, it's on par with a HD 7950. Making it a $244 HD 7950.

Not bad beating a stock 580, and edgeing into 7950 stock performance levels, for 244$.

Gotta love overclocking.
