Radeon HD 5770 or GeForce GTX 465?

I am relatively new to PC gaming, and recently bought a computer. I am trying to improve its' graphics card. It currently has integrated graphics that I am not satisfied with. This is the computer:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/HP+-+Pav...510y&cp=1&lp=1

I have PCI-E, and I am debating between two cards presently.

Fermi GeForce GTX 465:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Galaxy+-...&skuId=9973082

OR

ATI Radeon HD 5770:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/XFX+-+AT...&skuId=9715752

A note: I am aware I need to upgrade my power supply. I will be doing this before I purchase either card.

I am wondering if the increased price of the GeForce graphics card is really worth it. I've read a few reviews online and I've heard its' performance for its' price point isn't very impressive comparatively to others in the same range.

Any help or advice is appreciated.

The GTX465 is a terrible card - it sometimes has a higher TDP than the GTX470 while being slower.

I would do a $199 GTX460 before the 465.

I am unfortunately limited by where I live and not owning a credit card. I am only really able to purchase things at Best Buy and other major PC stores in the area. Based on BB website they don't offer a GTX460.

Use PayPal, I know Newegg accepts it. Or buy a Visa gift card.

The prices at BB are down right offensive($50+tax overpriced).

What resolution is your current monitor and what is the rating of your PSU?

If PSU is rated between 350W-400W, you do not have to upgrade the PSU to use a 5770, provided it has a spare 6 pin pci-e cable.

You can also test your luck searching for some used cards, few traders accept money orders, if you are interested.
A 5770 should suffice for most of the games currently in the market at <1080p.

You don't have a checking account and debit card? You can buy from newegg (and others) using a money order even if you have to. Those Best Buy prices suck dick

His computer:

If your power supply has a 6-pin PEG, or spare molex/SATA connectors, then you shouldn't need to upgrade the PSU with an HD5770. It doesn't use very much power.

Given your computer I would go with an HD5770, and as others suggested using paypal or a money order with Newegg.com The HD5770 is a better match to the rest of your system.

I can tell you definitively avoid the GTX 465. There is no reason anyone should purchase that card.

It performs worse than the GTX 460 while consuming probably more power than your power supply can handle.

The 5770 is a good choice unless you can wait for the GTX 460 which BestBuy will be carrying very soon if not now.

Just be sure to get the 1GB version of the GTX 460.

GTX 460 is the better card and better choice rather than the 5770 and GTX 465

here in our country, the 5770 hawk cost as much as the GTX 460 768mb 192bit..

and the GTX 460 is really an overclockers dream, it's small but packs a punch

Thank you all for your advice. I will most likely be purchasing the 5770 since it's cheaper, will fit in my case easier, and has come recommended by various people.

Man the TDP is horrible. the taking up of over 330watts which is how many times more then a CPU. Grrrrrr.

You have no choice to go to BIG RED Monster CCC powner ATI company, alto after 4 years with my x800 and driver issues left and right and other issues, I will never own a ATI , soo I would get the GTX 465 just cuz IM scared of ATI its the big Red Monster like I said the CCC powner the ubber dubber.

Honestly Ive seen benchmarks and the performance is similar between the 5770 and 465.. Im just saying I would go with nVidia. Either way you win but youll end up formatting your system 4 5 times,, cuz of ATI's great drivers,, one version were ok, next it does everything in slomo or cant find directX ..... soo I warned you

Here's what I would do. Look on the AT FS/T forum. (note, this works even if you don't have a credit card and can't get paypal because you can always get a money order). Look for cards 150 and under. Pretty much anything you find will be a better deal. Personally I'd get a 4890, or if you want nvidia get a GTX 275 or 260. All those cards are relatively similar in performance, with the 275 and 4890 being kinda close. With the money you save get something like an athlon II x3 or whatnot, sell your old CPU on FS/T and you should have a pretty nice budget gaming setup for less than 199 at the end of it all. It'll take some work though.

I laughed a bit :) But anyhow, ATI drivers are fine, the 465 is not. There is no reason you should purchase that card. Performance is similiar, but the TDP and cost are not.

I also think you're trolling with the use of 'ubber dubberr' and the lack of grammar.

The gtx 465 is was getting a bad rap for its cost at 270$, but at 204$ AR and a free copy of Metro it's a good deal.

Its not all that much slower then a 5850 @ 1900x1080. And very close or = to the 230$ gtx 460

it was getting a bad rap because it has high power consumption, is loud, and runs hot for its relative performance.

It runs no hotter and consumes no more power then a gtx470 and for 270$ people seem to think the gtx 470 is a good deal? Well it's 65$ less then a gtx470, so why isn't it a good deal now? Performance is just a notch below a 5850 now with the latest drivers as seen in the Anandtech gtx 460 review.

Same goes for the 5830 @ 200$ (people said its a good deal) but the 5830 is a good bit slower then the gtx465 now.

That card is also a turd only considering power consumption. If you don't care about that or heat, its a good choice.
