Radeon HD 3800s to be cheaper than 8800 GTs?

With Nvidia's GeForce 8800 GT out the door and benchmarked, the big question is whether AMD's upcoming RV670-based Radeon HD 3800 graphics processors will have what it takes to compete. Specifications for the Radeons have leaked out already, and it seems like the fastest model (nicknamed "Gladiator") will run at 825MHz with 512MB of 1200MHz GDDR4 memory. That tells us little about real-world performance, but Fudzilla claims to already know how the new Radeon will perform, and says AMD will lose to Nvidia. Quite badly so. For the "Gladiator" Radeon HD 3800, Fudzilla quotes performance 8-10% lower than that of the GeForce 8800 GT.

Fudzilla says AMD will use lower prices to nab sales away from Nvidia. As it did with the Radeon HD 2600 and 2400 series, AMD will apparently undercut Nvidia, this time by around $30-50. The Radeon HD 3800 may therefore be priced under the $200 mark when it launches on November 15.

The fastest of the upcoming RV670XT will cost less than Geforce 8800GT. We already informed you that this 825MHz+ clocked card is going to lose to a 600MHz default clocked 8800GT, but ATI will simply lower its prices to remain competitive.

ATI already did this with the 2600XT/PRO and 2400XT/PRO series, and this put quite a dent in Nvidia sales, so the company plans do it again with both RV670XT and PRO. We still don?t know the real prices, but we guess that ATI can easily drop some $30 to $50 from the price, and we have heard that RV670XT is between eight to ten percent slower than the 8800GT.

Radeon HD38x0, aka RV670XT, might be selling for as low as ?199 or a few dollars more, which will certainly spell trouble for Nvidia. We will let you know when the prices are final and the launch should be fixed at 15th of November, in some two weeks.

But how low can they go?

If we are looking at 10% difference that's worth $30 to me and NVIDIA wins.

If they fixed the AA and AF issues and fixed their vista dx10 performance than I wouldn't care less about 10% speed difference... Cheaper the merrier. 😛

I've been an ATI fanboy for a long time but if ATI can't cut it this time around then I'll be going with the 8800GT. DX10 his here and I'm tired of waiting for ATI to perform.

I think the stated AMD/ATI intent is to be competitive (not necessarily the fastest) and to kick nVidia in price. Probably ticks off the fanboys but pays the bills. It's not that they are giving up on performance they just want to fight where all the money is - the business desktop.

I think it's all FUD. 38xx will probably have around the same performance as 8800GT. Doesn't really matter to me as my next card will most likely be nVidia, that is unless ATI manages to have drastically better performance like it did with GeForceFX/5 series vs. Radeon 9700/9800 years ago.

Price and performance talks. Not some card that cost $600 to have performance crown.

I don't think there was a time I even payed and kept a video card that was over $200. Personally I think all these video gaming cards should be whole lot cheaper than what it is now.

If I could get away with $150 card and you pay $500 to play uber high resolutions than I'm satisfied. After all computers are a hobby. I'm not to do something remotely spectacular with it. I'm just trying to fire up a game when I get bored.

price/performance is big to me.

I'll just have to wait till the new ATI card comes out in a few weeks to see what it offers.

I guess this card is for those who don't care about DX10.. of course all the current cards are for those who don't care about DX10 as all perform poorly in DX10... Too bad though that ATI messed up their cards again.. what gives?

ATi Driver support still sucks the big one. nVidia all the way, ATi just needs to get their sh!t together

This information is coming from Fudzilla, so take it with a grain of salt. They are wrong a lot more often than they are right.

If Ati's 3800 series were slower than the 8800gt, would Nvidia have pushed the launch forward by several weeks? I find it laughable that fudzilla claims the 3800 will be slower, when I have not seen even the slightest believable hint that it will be so.

I agree except that instead of "grain of salt" I would have said "block of salt".

This is a stINQ spin off site not an actual news site.

my MB is Crossfire so I'm interested in seeing what the 3800's can do, even if they're slower and not much cheaper, the fact I can Crossfire them is a big plus in my eyes.

I'm not holding my breath for RV670. I run my 2900XT at 825/910 giving me the same core speed and a ton more memory bandwidth and I can't even come close to 8800GT performance in most situations.

Dedicated AA hardware would be nice, but at 1920x1200, AA is the least of my worries.

They were right with the 8800 GT though and that's very much like and related to this. Gotta give'em that.

Agreed.

$200-300 is my budget for a graphics card atm, and the 8800 GT exceeded my expectations in that area O.O

Didn't Anands' 8800GT acticle says the Radeon's were going to perform worse too? I've heard it from a few places actually.

From Anand's article.
"AMD has yet to come out with its 8800 GT competitor, but we've heard some rumors here and there. First, our understanding is that the RV670 based AMD part will not be any faster than the 2900 XT (and will likely be at least a little bit slower). "
ATI vs 8800GT

If its slower than the 2900XT which the 8800GT destroys even if its $50 cheaper I'd say the $50 more for the GT is well worth it.

THey pulled the 8800GT info from other sites. I remember when one rumor would spread, they would jump on it immediately. There have been no benchmarks or proof that the 3800 is worse or better.

I'm a betting man..I say ATI has a leg up..if not pulling even. They have all really messed up their model numbers though. HD2900 > HD3800 .. confusing.

Yep, that is the biggest hint that we are in for interesting times.
