Radeon-equipped iMacs Graphics Problems

There are threads on the Apple support forums relating to the issue and according to AppleInsider, Apple is aware of the issue. Some owners who have called the support line have been told that a fix is in the works and is expected to be rolled out with the Mac OS X 10.5.7 update. A few users report that replacement systems have been offered after troubleshooting failed. If this is a hardware problem, replacement systems may suffer from the same issue though.

Sounds like a software problem that's being addressed.

I remember a lot of Nvidia Mac owners reporting problems in the past too...
 
Since Apple is aware of the issue and are working on a patch/firmware update, it's a platform issue. I find it hard to believe faulty hardware could be fixed with that.

Not to mention Macs suck anyway 😛
 
However, some users are saying that the freeze issue happens when running Windows in a Boot Camp partition where drivers or Mac software would not be the cause of an issue.

Software problem, typical Mac diagnostic. 😛

It's good that Apple address the problem and are working on a solution. Well it's certainly nothing compare to the dying NVIDIA 9600M and 9400M GPUs fiasco.

I second that, it looks like a workable problem, unlike nVidia's issue with the 8600, 9400 and 9600 series of cards. nVidia has done more fiasco's than anyone else, FX DX9 horrible performance, unlimited rebranding of the same G92 based product, over charging for their products when there's no competition (GTX 280/260 untill the HD 4000 arrived), poor SM 3.0 dynamic branch performance on GeForce 6800 and it's broken PureVideo decoder. ATi isn't free of their mistakes neither, but at least is more trustable.
 
If it was related to the graphic card itself, it would have issues also in Windows:

"Apple may already be aware of the issue. Some of those calling the company's support line have heard from technicians that there are numerous reports and that a fix is in the works, possibly arriving along with the looming Mac OS X 10.5.7 update. Some are being offered replacement systems after unsuccessful troubleshooting"

But when is hardware related, it gives issues regardless of the OS like with the 9400, 9600 and the 8600 series of cards which breaks in Windows and Macs. So definitively is a software issue or the Power Supply isn't enough for that card.

1) It isn't proven to be AMD's fault. Apple can just as likely be at fault since everything is integrated by them. The only way to conclusively say it's AMD's fault is to take those cards and try them in a Windows based system.

2) It hasn't been proven that this isn't a software/driver glitch on the part of Apple. A few anecdotes does not a fact make.

3) How does this rate in comparison with the PROVEN bad nVidia GPU's?

4) How many of you even use Macs?

The question to ask would be: What proprietary hardware do macs have in them that Pc's do not? Bad Bios? Firmware?

If the cards run fine under pc's but not on macs you need to look at the differences.

Yep. It definitely looks like a hardware issue. I'm betting heat considering how hot they run. This could be like the ole RRoD. Some people were commenting on the original article about having problems with other 4xxx series cards on the PC. This could just be the start.

Pure speculation at this point, but if heat is the factor then apple would be to blame for supplying a poor cooling solution.

on subject; Its funny that apples fastest videocard is in an AIO pc instead of a mac pro or a macbook pro.

EDIT: it looks like the 4870 is available on the mac pro.
