Radeon 9800SE vs. 9800 Pro

So, my cousing wants a new graphics card, but he does not have a lot of money to spend on it. I suggested a 9800SE, as he can get a good deal (here in Argentina).

My brother has a 9800 Pro card, and I was wondering what are the real world differences between them, performace wise.

I know that the 9800 Pro has 8 pipelines and 256-bit memory interface, and that the 9800 SE has 4 pipelines and 128-bit memory.

But how does this translates to real world performance? He'll only play games at 1024x768... will the 9800SE be half as powerfull or are we talking about 10-20% performance difference?

What processor?

The 9800pro can certainly be twice as fast at that res with AA and AF in use.

A 9600pro is about the same performance as a 9800SE, so if you can get a 9600pro cheaper, it would probably be a better buy.

I wouldn't buy less than a 9800pro/6600GT these days.

Are you talking about the system in my sig? My G450 manages XP, but I do notice some slowdowns when draggin windows and some 2d effects, such as transparencies, etc.

Yeah, the first vid card i had, a 9800pro would conflict with the onboard sound whenever i tried to play a game. Eventually i had to turn it off and then get a pci sound card. Ever had any problems like that.

The 9600XT will be a little faster. Just make sure it is a true 9600XT with 128MB ram and 500/600 core/memory clocks.

Nope. My brother's comp has an Asus P4P800 mobo with onboard sound and there's no problems with the graphics card.

I can't really tell the clocks from MSI page. It should be good though. You usually only run into the slower clocked cards when they have 256MB of memory.

Yeah, they try to cheat and make you think you get better performance with more memory and a slow GPU.

i would recomend a nvidia 6200

with the ablity to open up four more pipes almost making it a 6600gt
