Radeon 9800pro...DDR-II or not???

I read anandtechs review and I saw no mention of DDR-II though I see preorders at pricewatch stating DDR-II...So which is it???

The 128MB versions use DDR I as far as I know. The "Built by ATi" versions come with DDR I at least. The 256MB version may be a different story, though. That might be an "Ultra" version with higher core/mem clocks.

Yup, I agree. The 256mb version will use DDR II.

Both of these clearly state 128mb, but the ETAs are a bit off from now....so could this be right...Also no mention of ultra!!!

It is pricewatch....go there and search for "9800" and then go to the sites(you can't direct link pages...)....maybe be a typo but I am reporting what I am seeing...

go to ATI's homepage, email an ATI rep, or go to Rage3D.com boards. Either way, you'll find out that the R350 128MB isn't going to use DDR-II. The 256MB version however (when and if it sees the light of day) should use DDR-II since by that time Samsung/etc. should have better yields at lower costs. GameVE.com needs to get their sh!t straight, the 9800/P won't have DDR-II (at least not for now).

Not to thread crap, but is there a good article out there that outlines the technical differences between DDRI and DDRII?

Thanks guys,
CH2

hang on......the 256MB version will have 256MB of DDRII (or "GDDR2") AND a 256bit bus?

Wouldn't that cost way too much?????

From Anand's NV30 preview in November:

Where NVIDIA manages to remain competitive is by implementing higher speed "DDR2" memories. We put "DDR2" in quotes because there is no official DDR2 spec for graphics memory, and the only difference between this memory and conventional DDR is that the electrical and signaling characteristics of the memory are borrowed from the JEDEC DDR2 specification. This memory does not transfer 4 times per clock but simply improves on the way data gets in and out of the chip, allowing for much higher clock rates. This should sound familiar as it is very similar to what ATI did with GDDR3.

It will be more difficult to implement DDR2 and a 256-bit memory bus b/c of the current limitations of existing memory controllers. Both nVidia and ATi acknowledged this in various statements and addressed the situation in different ways. ATi went with DDR-I and a 256-bit memory bus; nVidia went with a 128-bit bus and DDR2 to achieve higher clocks. We all know who made the better decision. 🙂 My guess is that the 256MB DDR2 version will be a Fall refresh, as that slot is looking less likely to be filled by R400. NV35 is all but confirmed to have both a 256-bit bus and DDR2, so they've made the necessary changes as well.

At the speeds that the 9800 RAM is supposed to run at, it has to use DDR-II memory. DDR simply wouldn't get close to that speed.

but is there a good article out there that outlines the technical differences between DDRI and DDRII?

Sorry, I don't know of any articles that are easy to read, and get it right at the same time - but here is a quick, and very basic explanation of the differences.

The only difference between DDR2 and DDR memory are a slightly modified signalling system, internal re-design and a lower supply voltage. The most important thing to realise is that at the same clock speed DDR2 is no faster than DDR. This is a feature commonly talked about on enthusiast web sites but is based on a misunderstanding of the memory.

The internal redesign is the most important difference - it basically 'underclocks' the core. It would be practically impossible to make DDR memory run at 500 MHz (1000 DDR) as on the Radeon - whereas it would be much much simpler to make DDR2 memory run at the same speed (the bus runs at 500 MHz/1000 DDR, while the actual core runs at 250 MHz).

Similar changes are planned for DDR-3.

Thank you my friend.

doesn't all ATi cards since the original radeon support dual monitor displays? I know my 8500 does..

Yep, it should support two monitors (DVI+D-Sub)...but still no dual-DVI :| Maybe the NV35 or 256MB version of R9800pro will have dual-DVI.

Not for people who MUST have the latest. 😉

And I believe they are figuring $550 for the "Ultra" 9800 (9900?).
