i'm looking to buy a new computer for college from dell. they have a bunch of these x300 ati cards and x800 cards. i don't think i can afford a 9800 pro card. how does the x300 and x800 stack up against the 9800 pro.

X800SE or X800 Pro?
X300 is nothing more than a PCIe Radeon 9200, and it may have a speed bump to it.
The 9800 pro would be midrange-ish.
An X800SE would probably be marginally faster than a 9800 pro in most situations, assuming it is clocked higher than the 9800 pro.
X800 pro is a good deal faster than the 9800 pro.

dont waste your time with a x300se. its the same as a radeon 9200se you wont be able to play and games on them so get a 9600 or something if your on a budget. though it depends on what your using your system for...

Actually, the X300SE is a basically a PCI-E version of the 9600SE, except it probably has its clocks lower (so more like 9550SE then, I suppose). It doesn't really make a difference, though, you'll theoretically be able to play DX9 with it but it's so damn slow you won't want to. The 9800 Pro otoh is a very capable card.

9800 Pro: 380/680, 8 pipes, 256 bit
X300SE: 250/400, 4 pipes, 64 bit (just pulled the clocks out of my ass, but they should be close to that)

Do some frickin' research. The X300SE is the same speed as a 9600SE, more or less; search for benchmarks.
