Radeon 9800 pro prices are up

I've been watching closely the prices of Radeon 9800 pro (128 MB) for almost 3 months now, as I've been waiting for an opportunity to snactch one for a low price. However exactly the opposite has happend in the past couple of weeks their prices went up from ~$198 to ~$218... it gets older and more expenssive?! what gives?

I'm certain ATI is not producing as many 9800Pros as they used to, and up until about 3 days ago (when AGP 6600GTs started trickling into the market), the 9800Pro was really the only choice in the ~$200 price bracket. Anybody who wanted to upgrade but didn't want to wait for the 6600GT (or switch to PCIe) basically had no choice but to buy one.

Low supply + High demand = Prices go up. Simple microeconomics. Once the AGP 6600GTs become widely available for ~$200, demand for the 9800Pros will drop, as will their price.

I'm thinking your logic is correct on this issue.

BW86, your answer drove me to this page of newegg, and as you can see, most of the r9800p (128 mb) are OUT OF STOCK, which really proves the point of all the other guys who answered here. I just hope that you guys are right, and once the 6600GT catches on, the r9800p prices will be droped. I'll wait untill they get to around ~$170, which should be a couple of months (maybe after x-mas), since newegg does have them for ~$185 (although they're out of stock, which means you'll anyway wait 'till x-mas to get it).

By the time Xmas rolls around the 6600GT AGP will have dropped well below $200.

What's the point of buying a 9800 at that point?

and get that card

I think it outperforms in everything, and sometimes not by a small margin... 6600GT is a sweet card.

The price on the 9800Pro will (eventually) drop correspondingly; obviously it makes no sense to buy a 9800Pro for $200 when a 6600GT performs better and costs the same. Once the 6600GTs are widely available at or below MSRP, demand will drop like a rock on the ~$200ish 9800Pros; this will drive down the price on them (at least until the supply of new ones starts getting really low).

The reason the <= $200 AGP video cards have stayed at basically the same price for the last year is that there hasn't been anything to displace them, and new games like Doom3 and HL2 have kept demand high.
