Radeon 9800 Pro + P4 2.4C + 516 M of RAM

Hey guys,

I was just wondering if there were any issues using that combination. I am concerned that the processor is not fast enough to to take full advantage of the video card.

Any comments?

Thanks in advance.

I'm quite a noob at this stuff...

By overclocking would I be increasing the FSB speed, and in that case, can I stick with PC2700 RAM?

Unless you've got really good PC2700, going much past 166MHz on the FSB isn't a good idea. You'd have to spring for some PC3200 or better. You could get 3.0GHz out of that 2.4 with the stock HSF...it's up to you and your wallet.

you could always try to up the FSB and see if its stable ... I have some PC2700 that runs at 200mhz just fine ... then again I also have some that is not ever stable at 166 ... ahh well

Sorry, I don't really understand what you mean. What do you mean by "stock FSB in sync"?

Basically I'm aiming at getting a 2.4c and overclocking it, and from what I know so far I have to have PC3200 to do that.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

Thanks again.

You seem to have it right.

If you are going to be overclocking a 2.4c it is strongly recommended that you have PC3200 or greater ram

you need PC3200 or higher

and a 2.4 P4c will not affect the performance of your card...

after like a XP1600+ , CPU speed doesn't matter on the most part, its mostly dependant on the vid card

You'll want at least PC3200, but remember that the only way to overclock P4's is to increase the FSB. With a 2.4C the default bus speed is 200MHz, the speed PC3200 is rated to run at, so you theoretically don't have much headroom even with PC3200. Personally I would go for PC3500 or higher. I have a lot of luck with my GeIL Golden Dragon PC3500, which isn't expensive at all ($224 for a gig twin pack). Now remember all the i865PE/i875P boards have "dividers" where you can set the CPU:RAM ratio, so, for example, you can run the CPU FSB at 250MHz, set the ratio to 5:4, and you'll be running the RAM at 200MHz. That would result in a nice 3.0GHz operating speed for the CPU while allowing you to run your RAM at its rated speed rather than attempting a 25% overclock. HOWEVER, it is known that this kind of "asynchronous" overclocking (not running the CPU:RAM ratio at 1:1) does not result in the best performance for the given CPU speed (that is to say your 2.4C running at 3GHz with a 250MHz FSB but a 5:4 ratio is a little slower than a 'real' P4 3.0GHz, where both the CPU and RAM are running at 200MHz FSB, meaning a 1:1 ratio). That does not mean, however, that you should spend 4x the money to get a P4 3.0 😉. Also remember it is not uncommon to go well beyond 3.0GHz with these chips, provided you are willing to spend a little more dough on a decent aftermarket heatsink/fan (Zalman 7000, SLK-900)... with any luck you'd then be hitting 3.20-3.30GHz.

ok I have 2 x 256 geil golden dragon pc4000 and a p4 2.4c I want to overclock to 3.0 do I just raise the FSB too 250? any other settings I should enable/disable etc?
