Radeon 9800 Pro giving some trouble

Okay, so, I have a system that I know can run things very well. I'll list the specs so you know what it can do:

Radeon 9800 Pro
AMD A64 3400+
1GB Corsair DDR400 RAM
80GB Seagate SATA HDD
Asus K8V-X Motherboard

Now, the problem. When I try to run Half Life 2 or Counterstrike Source with any Anti-Aliasing settings on (as in, anything that isn't AA being turned off) my framerate drops to 1 to 3 frames per second, and the game can barely even function.

When trying the video stress test in CSS, I can have AA turned on full, everything turned on full, 1600x1200 resolution, and I'll still get about 45-50 FPS.

This makes no sense to me. At first I was thinking maybe it was just a bad install of HL2, and right now I'm downloading a demo of UT2004 to see how that does. Battlefiend 1942 runs fine on all high settings. Deus Ex: Invisible War crashes when it tries to load the first level.

So why would CSS slow down to 1 frame per second to where I can't even play the game, if the video stress test works perfectly fine? I really can't figure this one out.. especially because my friend said that he gets even higher FPS on the stress test, and his computer has worse RAM and processor than mine, AND his videocard's cooling is faulty. Plus he can run the actual CSS game fine when AA is turned on, whereas I cannot run it at all.

Any help or suggestions?

Apanthropy, were you playing on a custom map ? With bots ?

I know one thing about C-S: Source, is that custom built maps, when poorly done (it's usually the case, too) have lots of issues making it so your f-p-s drops for pretty much nothing. Add the bots in a custom map, and it's five times worst. If the pathways are automatically done during the level loading, it's going to make your CPU suffer.

So I don't know which map you were playing in.

But I can confirm that custom maps, if not done correctly, can make your GPU / CPU cry. Just a little warning. If it was the case, then don't be surprised.

bots will do that to your system...have you tried online play? i can only run about 12 bots on my system before i get frequent drops to 1-3 fps.

No, they were regular official maps, regular players, no bots. I've tried both the Omega and Catalyst drivers, neither improve the situation. I've tried reinstalling the game, and that doesn't improve it either. I am increidbly stumped as to what the problem can be.. so please still offer suggestions, everyone.

hmm, i would try the card in a different system.. if the same thing happens, sounds like you have a faulty card, if not, there is clearly something up with your pc ie viruses, misconfigurations, lack of chipset drivers, etc..

also, is this a new build? or did it just start happening,? it could be power supply issue i guess.

I doubt the psu could cause this. A psu problem normally wont cause a pc to crash. If the psu is the problem, then the system would hard restart randomly, and sometimes not even turn on. When a radeon 9700/9800 doesnt get the power it needs, it displays a red error screen. It wont just slow down.
