Okay, so, I have a system that I know can run things very well. I'll list the specs so you know what it can do:
Radeon 9800 Pro
AMD A64 3400+
1GB Corsair DDR400 RAM
80GB Seagate SATA HDD
Asus K8V-X Motherboard
Now, the problem. When I try to run Half Life 2 or Counterstrike Source with any Anti-Aliasing settings on (as in, anything that isn't AA being turned off) my framerate drops to 1 to 3 frames per second, and the game can barely even function.
When trying the video stress test in CSS, I can have AA turned on full, everything turned on full, 1600x1200 resolution, and I'll still get about 45-50 FPS.
This makes no sense to me. At first I was thinking maybe it was just a bad install of HL2, and right now I'm downloading a demo of UT2004 to see how that does. Battlefiend 1942 runs fine on all high settings. Deus Ex: Invisible War crashes when it tries to load the first level.
So why would CSS slow down to 1 frame per second to where I can't even play the game, if the video stress test works perfectly fine? I really can't figure this one out.. especially because my friend said that he gets even higher FPS on the stress test, and his computer has worse RAM and processor than mine, AND his videocard's cooling is faulty. Plus he can run the actual CSS game fine when AA is turned on, whereas I cannot run it at all.
Any help or suggestions?
