Has anyone gotten the ATI Radeon 9700 Pro to work (2D is fine), with
either Redhat or Mandrake(or any other distribution)?

I just read this Change Log from XFree86.org

Change Log
Number 389 claims added 2D support for Radeon 9000, Moblity M9,
and the Radeon 9700.

Now this is based on XFree86 4.2.99.2 (21 October 2002)
Now I am sure this requires an upgrade to XFree86.

It looks like Radeon 9700 is indeed supported by XFree.
On the other hand it looks a bit strange to me you can't get your GeForce to work in accelerated mode. Are you using the nvidia drivers ?? I run a nForce myself, which has a GeForce 2 onboard. It was a bit of a PITA to get network drivers working, since you need to get the network drivers from .. the network (luckily I had another cd burner), but after the install everything went flawlessly. Very stable.
