Radeon 9700 Pro, best bang for buck

Anyone care to venture how long the Radeon 9700 Pro will continue to be the best bang for the video buck??? It's been amazing to me that since last summer neither ATI or NVIDIA has really improved much on this venerable card. With the price of it hovering around $250 (US) this has got to be the best DX9 video card for your dollar out there. The newest offerings from ATI and NVIDIA are only marginally better, and not because of some new architecture benefit, but mainly because of slight clockspeed increases. For the 9700 Pro to have lasted well over a year at essentially the top shows that most games, even the lastest Doom and Half Life are not going to push the limits for most users. I say buy them while they're cheap and enjoy them for a while.

Or the 9800 non pro. Got mine for < $250 several months ago. It's flashed to a pro and overclocked past the default pro speeds. 🙂

Yeah its a good card but when you can find Nvidia 5900 Non-Ultra with 2.2ns memory and overclock it to ultra speeds for $188 i think thats a better deal.

link to one for 188 with 2.2ns?

I can't find a 9800np for $200, while i can find various 5900nu for under $200...

the 5900 seems to be the best value for the money right now..

They were at circuit city for that price, though they're probably all oss now.

Just swapped my 9700Pro for a 9700Pro AIW. Had tears in my eyes when I sent it out. It's one great card. Hope this AIW works as well.

I was planning on keeping my 9700 Pro until next summer. Too bad it fried and I had to get a 9800 Pro. 🙁

I like my 9700 pro too 🙂

too bad it isn't QUITE perfect with driver issues... but it works great for the most part! 🙂

my 9700pro is a sexy beast.. and overclocks really well. I'm in 9800 pro speeds right now. If you look on ebay.. 9800 pros are going for 220 brand new... 9800nonpros go for 200 brand new (cables only) If u dont mind not having a warranty go for that... its a great price

LOL!!! I rather pay $ 20 more for ati 9800 non pro than nvidia's 5900 non ultra, atleast I know that I won't have to upgrade again soon specially when directx 9 games are now here

every body knows nvidia's fx sucks and has problems with directx 9 especially when you enable aa and af with all the eye candy it's "supposed" to offer

- if your not planning to play games or play only older directx 8 games then buy nvidia 5900fx non ultra or 5950 fx ultra they can handle older games very well

- if you don't mind paying a $20 more and want the best image quality a videocard can offer ,the fastest overall card that can handle pratically any new and old games using both directx 8 or directx9 ,also can handle future games using aa and af ,high resolutions with all the eye candy that the card offers then buy ATI's 9700,9800 or 9800xt

9800 pro's price just drop over $ 100 canadian

some retailers used to sell the ati 9800 pro for $ 500 here ,now it's going for $370-$390 canadian dollar retail box while nvidia's 5900 fx ultra goes for $ 450-$ 540 retail box

so which card price/performance is really a better deal?

I can't find any 9800np for $220 anywhere. Besides the most i wanted to spend is $170, and i'm already $30 over it..

What is the best video card for $200?

A 9800np if you can find it. If you can't get an fx5900 which is about $190.

i still love my 9700Pro,
it performs so well, ever since I got it. No complains about the money I have spent..

but back then was $350.00
phew.. a bomb...
more expensive then my CPU + HSF + Motherboard and PSU all combined together
