Radeon 9600 vs 9600pro vs 9600SE vs 9600XT

What the heck is up with all these different versions? I cant even find reviews on anandtech of the origional 9600, or the SE. The prices seem to wildly differ as well. Does anyone know which of these cards is the best deal? I'm looking for a video cards in the $100 range

$100 range you want a geforce4 ti4200, it's much better than a 9600 SE or non-pro. 9600 pro is a little better than a ti 4200, but not really $50 better except for some games where you can turn on AA/F.

For 9600 pro vs. 9600xt vs. fx 5700 see the Anandtech articles. The fx5700 ultra is actually a decent competitor to the pro/xt, unlike the fx 5600.

I would give a little more credit to the 9600np

I got my BB one and the core OC to 440 (curent setting...can go for more) and the thing is on a passive heatsink ...!!

Mem didn't fair so well..clocked at the 4ns level (500Mhz DDR)

I get over 12,000+ in 3dmark2k1 and over 3200 in 3dmark2k3

this is on a shuttle xpc 2500+ oc 3200+

I think this is the pro level performance...I could be wrong

For the extra price of the XT over the PRO, I consider the XT nothing more than a novelty at this point. It's kind of ridiculous.

Careful what you say.... hardware may come in here bashing 3dfx again...

And yes, the XT is overpriced compared to the pro... and sometimes you can get a really cheap non-pro that does very well.

You pay more for that "guaranteed" level of performance.

This sucks, that means I have to spend at least $150 to get a videocard that wont be useless come june (ie when HL2 + Doom 3 are out)

Edit: I noticed that the SE and XT arent revivied many places. tomshardware used to have great super video card reviews where you could compare performance of somthing old skool like a TNT2U to a GF mx etc.. Are there any good reviews like that around?

Just a note, I'd say a majority of people here have given up on Tom's website, myself included. The reviews there are getting worse each time. There are much better reviews on the web...and I'm sure people will post some now ...

Going from a 8500 to a 9600 is what I'd consider a "major" upgrade. I'm about to get a 9600 regular or pro, also upgrading from a 8500. Even the normal 9600 would be a huge leap.

Really? I've had many people tell me that the jump from 8500 to 9600 isn't worth the money... maybe the upgrade to the 9600PRO may be, but not to the regular version. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

It's not much of a leap at all unless you're playing PS 2.0 games or enable AA/AF. Otherwise, my benchmarks are actually showing that 8500 is faster due to higher fillrate and memory bandwidth!

I also have an 8500 64mb retail...served me well for the past 2.5 years and still going. Would like to know whats a good upgrade though. Maybe I'll upgrade next year but still would like to know .

For $167.00 on new egg, would it be better to by a 9800SE and clock it up. You would then have the 9800GPU that would be at least equal to or better than the 9600pro?

Yeah especially to the 9600 se.....kinda glad I didn't buy that one at Best Buy. My 8500 is the Non LE with 128mb RAM. Clocked at 275 at the core and 275 for memory. Anyone happen to know how much it can safely be overclocked??

The 9600 IS a 9800 Gpu with 2 things different. has only 4 pipes, and has half the vertex shaders or something. Otherwise it is the same, with hyper z 3+ dx9, smartshader 2.1, smoothvision 2.1 and all the good stuff.
