It's pretty obvious that ATI wouldn't release a card that is slower than the 8500 and call it the 9000.
well i dont know, nvidia managed to release the geforce '4' mx cards that were quite franky $hit not as good as geforce 3's and barely better than the geforce 2's.
could be like a radeon 9000LE or something
Considering that the 9000 is a member of their value line (isn't it the RV250?) that's entirely possible. I think it's somewhat unlikely given that would be a radical departure from ATI's current naming practices, but still possible. But what really makes me think that it is unlikely is the fact that Radeon 8500 cards range from $100-$200 and Radeon 7500 series cards are basically in the $30-50 range. Where do they hope to position a card like this? I
suppose that they get rid of the Radeon 7500 and replace it with the Radeon 9000 in the $40-$60 market while the Radeon 8500 can fill in the $70-$130 market, with the 9700 taking over from $150 upwards. But there would be a lot of confusion for one thing, not to mention all this hoopla over a dog of a card. Though what you're saying is still possible.
At least with Nvidia, their real GeForce cards still command anywhere from $140-$300 in the market and the GeForce 4mx can fill in the $65-$100 range leaving the GeForce2mx series to fill the $30-40 market and the GeForce 3 series to fill the $80-$130 market.
