Radeon 9000 pro, 9100, and 9500 Pro

i've been stuck with a xabre 400 for about 4 months now, but i'm finally going to be able to get a new vid card. i was a little too slow on that $80 ti4200 at best buy, unfortunately, but the idea of an $80-90 video card is pretty nice. the 9100 128 Mb and the 9000 pro 128 mb can be gotten for about $80-90. of course, the 9500 Pro can be gotten for about $180, and that is a sweet card.

i know that the 9100 is a rebranded 8500, and should nominally be faster than the 9000 Pro, but i've also heard that the newest ATi drivers have given the 9000 pro a pretty large performance increase. is it true that with the latest drivers that the 9000 pro is faster than the 9100? i know that many of you will say that i should just spend twice as much and get the 9500 pro over either the 9100 and the 9000, but i don't think that its worth the money. i really need a new video card now, and i'm planning on upgrading when Doom III comes out (in other words, i'm not too terribly worried about future performance, i just wanna play splinter cell, UT2k3 and unreal II). i'm only going to play at 1024x768, maybe with anisotropic filtering. which card would anyone suggest, and what brands should i stay away from? i know that sapphiretech cards tend to be a little funky, clock frequency wise. thanks!

You shouldn't spend twice as much if you don't want to or you don't have it. 9500 is the Best buy, now, but only if you can spend that much. I know I would if I could. As it is I will hunt down some Hercules 8500 64MB or 128MB if I can. 9100 is 8500LE. I don't like it's frequency (lower than 8500). However, I am interested in that news about performance increase of Rad9000. Can you give me a link to it? Some 9100 can be overclocked to regular 8500 frequences. I've seen one, working even somewhat higher frequency than regular, but that was a Hercules card with its BIOS replaced. I've no idea how it is done. It's performance was at par with my friends GF4 4200 in most games.

Wish I could help you with a brand. All I can say is, I used Hercules whenever I could (my current KYRO I). It was always, and still is, joy of my life. 😀 (to bad my KYRO is overrun by Unreal II, only playable setting is 800x600x16).

i heard about the performace increase on a forum, so i don't have a link, unfortunately. i'm gonna see if maybe i can stretch my money a little bit, because i would really, in all honestly, like to get a non pro 9700.

nevermind, i'm just going to spend the money on a non pro 9700. i played unreal 2 at my friends house (he has a 128 MB 8500 on an 1800+ XP system) and it was very jerky.
