i've been stuck with a xabre 400 for about 4 months now, but i'm finally going to be able to get a new vid card. i was a little too slow on that $80 ti4200 at best buy, unfortunately, but the idea of an $80-90 video card is pretty nice. the 9100 128 Mb and the 9000 pro 128 mb can be gotten for about $80-90. of course, the 9500 Pro can be gotten for about $180, and that is a sweet card.
i know that the 9100 is a rebranded 8500, and should nominally be faster than the 9000 Pro, but i've also heard that the newest ATi drivers have given the 9000 pro a pretty large performance increase. is it true that with the latest drivers that the 9000 pro is faster than the 9100? i know that many of you will say that i should just spend twice as much and get the 9500 pro over either the 9100 and the 9000, but i don't think that its worth the money. i really need a new video card now, and i'm planning on upgrading when Doom III comes out (in other words, i'm not too terribly worried about future performance, i just wanna play splinter cell, UT2k3 and unreal II). i'm only going to play at 1024x768, maybe with anisotropic filtering. which card would anyone suggest, and what brands should i stay away from? i know that sapphiretech cards tend to be a little funky, clock frequency wise. thanks!
