Radeon 8500LE clocked at 250/238 instead of 250/250 - why?

Hi all,

I finally dropped my Voodoo5 in favor of a Radeon 8500LE :) made by Club3D. So far, I'm extremely happy with the card. One thing that surprised me was that my card's core was clocked at 250, but memory at only 238 MHz, although it is equipped with 3,6 ns Hynix memory chips, the same ones that the 8500 runs at 275 MHz. I used PowerStrip to put them on par with the core, and of course, everything is stable as it should be. I plan on overclocking later, so far, I can't find the time to play with my new setup :( . My first benchmarks came out (I think) very well even in W2000 at the stock 250/238 setting - around 8300 in 3DMark2001SE. Anyway, I thought my 250/238 combination had to be some anomaly, but then I read this thread, where dexvx wrote the same about his Hercules Radeon 8500LE. I would understand this in the case of the Hercules, which should be (as far as I know) equipped with "only" 4 ns memory chips, but why in my case? I forgot to say that everywhere on the web, I only found specification for my card stating 250/250 clock.

I am also planning to exchange the stock heatsing/fan for some Socket7 that I'll be able to fit on the core, and maybe try the pencil mod (sorry, don't have the link with me right now, but I think you can find it too) to rise the voltage of the memory and/or core. If anyone has any experience with this, I would be happy to hear it.

Thanks everyone for their input.

Dude, if you find a linky for the pencil mod, send it to me, I've wanted to know how its done.

As for running at 250/238 instead of 250/250.... perhaps the company just started using 3.6ns ram and was using 4ns before, and they hadn't accounted for that change in the BIOS.....

Yea, my Hercules 8500LE was at 250/240 when I got it, but mine has the 4 ns ram. You card should overclock well though. I have my Hecules running at 275/275 right now, and it works perfectly, with no extra cooling and no pencil trick.
